Hi friends, looking forward to joining you on VQ.

I'm currently renovating my 'new' place and I'm planning with my ID with regards to the electrical / data plan.

Here's my tentative one, any thoughts?

The ceiling data/power points are for my Sonos PLAY:1's and PLAY:3's (all purchased already) :p

My intention is to use 1 x AC68U and 2 x AC66U to provide the wireless bits, but 99% of the data will still be carried through the wired LAN (so I don't need the AC87U or those crazy spaceship models recently launched).

I've also told the ID I will require certified CAT6 Belden/AMP/3M cabling.

Any more tips?

Are you on the no-contract plan or the 200Mbps contract plan? I can re-apply your speed profile if you wish - PM me your name and postal code.

However if you're on the no-contract plan do note that your speed remains at 200Mbps as opposed to 600Mbps.
i was on 100mbps contract from oct 2010 to oct 2012.. anyway i called up n e guy say its e zhone firmware and i requested to update e firmware at 3am.. will see how

False ceiling throughout?

I assume certified Cat6 means normal UTP cables right. Just make sure the electrician don't mix the data and power cables side-by-side and squeeze into a small single trunking. Oh, make sure the electrician terminate both ends of the Cat6 data cables in accordance to T568B standards.

@YouKilledKenny Why do you have so many power points at ceiling height? Are you running some kind of reality TV with CCTVs?

I think his diagram suggest that he will be placing his sonos speakers up at the ceiling. Not sure why the same amount of data though... Sonos wireless works well enough so theoretically only 1 device needs a wired connection.

I study wireless networks for as a profession, so I am quite wary of all the problems with interference and wireless channel fading/multi-path problems and path loss and what not.

SonosNet (if not using the new WiFi feature) works using a proprietary multi-hop ad hoc network over the 2.4 GHz channel. If they are not using CSMA-type of wireless access protocol then it must be some wide-band spread spectrum technique. Regardless, the 2.4 GHz channel is as crowded as it already is so I rather the hop-distance from node to node be minimal, hence some of the ceiling points have data.

Thanks for the tip, I forgot about the need for separation, so I reminded my ID this morning.

I'm not going to run it through false ceilings though, will be using industrial looking trunking (as part of the decor).

why don't go for ubnt setup? :D

Ubiquiti Networks - Products

I once took a look at their offerings for work, but its priced way out of my price range for my home setup :D

I generally am comfortable with a full copper 1Gbps setup that will be good for another 5-10 years until 10Gbps copper becomes commodity (just like how 1Gbps is right now).

The 24-port switch I got only costs me USD$90+! Can't beat that kind of prices :o

Because noisy :X

My question would be, why not get a PoE+ switch and ceiling APs :D

For the wireless setup?

The ceiling APs you are referring to are thin APs?

I was considering those for a while but they tie me in to the vendor and I'd rather have something I can swap out at will, without having to be tied into any vendor ecosystem. Granted, I'm quite happy with Asus wireless products right now so I'll run their gear for a little bit (mostly thanks to Merlin).

Anyway, as much as I depend on wireless systems for a living, I'll still want the wired LAN to carry most of my data :D

Just for information, it's just a IE UI glitch.

It's not impacting the router in any way.

Let ASUS SG inform ASUS TW RD about this.

It's impacting IE 11 on Windows OS (UI glitch) (but as if still got people using IE these days lol)

Firefox and Chrome isn't affected.

Let ASUS SG inform ASUS TW RD about this.

Ya I thought I arranged everything properly but due to Singtel/Netlink/ViewQwest, now I am going to without internet from today till next tuesday!

I have to say I am disappointed. I would suggest to ViewQwest not to suggest FTO unless they first inform their new subscriber that you could be without internet for 5-7 days! I was told that I could go FTO route instead of port 2 activation as it would mean starting my plan faster. I guess they left out the part that I would be without internet for 7 days.
