I realize this forum has a lot of young investors that have not yet experienced 1 full market cycle

when your confidence level is high, the odds of making mistakes could increase too

just be more cautious hehehe

Thanks Happymeowmeow.

I didnt start investing when market crashed then.
Probably should learn from you on how you handled it during the crisis.

It's one reason I don't bother participating in this thread. :)

No matter which forum, which thread, which group thing you join in the whole world, there are herd mentality. Unless one lives alone, you are bound to meet some or lots of herd mentality or peer pressured people.

Independent thinking, collective knowledge.
Seeking Alpha proves to be quite a good knowledge gathering ground. Despite the herd mentality like someone once said SA is too bullish most of the time.

Also, if there are million and billions of shares, odds are there are at least 100s if not 1000s of people thinking just like you on any particular stocks you pick.
Alas, independent thinking and sharing is always welcomed.

Agree with happymeowmeow, i too also bought sembcorp and Keppel Corp.
Herd mentality is not absolutely wrong if you know what you are doing. If you follow the herd from POSB investsaver and have been buying sti etf because you know that you are passive investor and are happy with market returns , it doesn't seem like a bad choice after all. Somemore many fund managers to date can't even beat the market returns lol.

I have been following the herd to buy Nikko STI etf with investsaver & oil stocks. So far so good :)

Understanding the herd and following the herd is two different things.
For me, if u wanna get market returns... Its okay to follow the herd... But in a safe way... Just buy the sti etf

If u wanna get above market returns, u must understand the herd mentality and take advantage of them. Like last year oil bear, there were a few different camps.
People who sold off all marine stocks and ran away
People who tried to pick up marine stocks cheap

I followed the second herd but not blindly, i avoid small and mid cap marine stocks... And only bought the best quality ones which are kep corp and semb corp, so sometimes it can be rewarding to understand the herd

Lol

19 omg xiao di di sia

Nowadays kids so rich

When i was 19 need to study full time and work part time to pay off my school fees and covering my expenses, no $$ buy stocks

Now kids 18 got $$ buy blue chips liao nice

That's true. I also would have nothing had I not tried my hand at some sidelines when I was younger.

Don't we all wish we had a tidy sum in our early 20s and already started investing?
Well, don't compare lor. Everyone different ideas.
I know of friends who are so averse to investing, would rather $$ sit in bank and rot.

Wah I started investing during NS by myself and only have 1/4 of flyfox's total CDP cash value (not counting the instruments I manage on behalf of my dad's money) :( I never did part time work or start business also during my sec school/poly days too.

No worries, I believe it's not too late though. In life I made many mistakes too and when I look back I felt I could have made better decisions...

Here's a quote

"No matter how many mistakes you make or how slow your progess, you are still way ahead of everyone who isn't trying"

I believe you are not too late. I could have missed the boat when Dow Jones was just few thousand points back then..but if we delve in the past, we lose focus of our future.

As long as u are willing to learn, have the right attitude and never give up, I am sure you will do well!

hang in there, you are doing fine :)

I wanted to invest earlier but the earliest SGX allowed is 18 I think.

Only started selling some stuff when I finished secondary school

cool! :s12::s12:

Seems like people who start business/investing young tend to be more successful!

Jim Rogers started selling bottles at baseball games at age of 5.

I think when someone is younger, he or she is more active which results in increased productivity etc. of course there are more reasons :)

Haha don't worry. I'm 5 years ahead of you, with my own set of problems and family background.

The only time I remotely even started anything related to running a business was to start a "book publishing company" in primary school. LOL. Fun times.

You now doing your degree? You took loan or parents paid for u?

I still remember having to work for one year to save up some $$ before doing my full time degree, i treat education as an investment too

Yeah I am graduating next month. I m lucky though, honestly my parents paid for me. Well since they pay for me, I used the money I earn to invest...

Since you paid yourself, you must be quite independent and your parents must be proud of you.

Anyway my results hasn't been good lah..I studied hard but I got v poor concentration...I tried my best alr & think I am wasting my parents money..oh well
