Heading to Italy for 11 days at the end of the month... Don't wanna bring my Galaxy S6 along but instead looking something that's cheap and durable to bring along.

My requirements are just to have a decent camera and fast enough to load GPS maps and travel apps without any lag.

I'm wondering if 1GB RAM is enough, or should I opt for 2GB RAM?

Any recommendations under $250? I'm thinking of the Lenovo A7000, but is the 8GB of storage enough? Seems like only 3GB is free out of the box. Shocking...

Yeah, but I plan to store videos etc on a long flight, and I'm scared the 16GB storage is limiting :(

Supposed to support USB OTG, but i don't have so can't try. haha. Not sure the camera on can compare with the zenfone 2 or not though. The Mi 4i camera is pretty decent to me, whereas I haven't heard great things about the Zenfone 2. Can't find with S6 of course. :s13:

For me, the $169 Redmi 2 is good enough. Brought it along with my overseas trip. The dual stand-by SIM slots are very convenient. Local prepaid SIM cards work fine without a glitch. GPS signal acquired almost instantly on new locations and the 4G connection are fine too.

I used Samsung OTG reader with it to read photos from my camera SD card. Worked perfectly.

Depending n whether you use 4G and which country as Redmi 2 local version only support FDD 4G.

Redmi 2 has microSD expansion and USB OTG also.

Yes. Unfortunately, KitKat doesn't allow apps and app data to be stored on SD card or something. Or there's some restriction etc. etc. So I thought I would not risk that and go for the Mi 4i instead since I'm planning to store GBs of maps + Instagram etc.

Though, perhaps down the road I'll be kicking myself wondering why I got a phone with only 16GB storage and no expansion... Seriously, why no 32GB? :(

Hugo Barra mentioned that there are plans to introduce a higher storage capacity of the Mi 4i in the near future. :)

But some apps data can be stored on SD card. I use OSMAND GPS navigation app and all the offline maps I downloaded are stored in the 32GB SD card of my Redmi. Photos taken are automatically stored in the SD card as well.

Don't worry. With 4G FDD Band 3, 7, and 8 that Redmi 2 supports, you have fairly good chances in finding 4G networks all around the world.

Not true. China and USA is the 2 place I confirmed it cannot be used. Depending on which telco you roam to. Look very carefully on the band column. I get stuck with it when I bring my Redmi to USA. Lucky I have S4 with me.

This is not a KK problem. My S4 on KK can do the job. Is a problem with Miui implementation. Early Miui do not even allow photo to store in SD until phone memory is full.

Unlikely you can stick a otg and put the phone in your pocket. Otg is only good when you need to do a backup on the "road". Else backing it up to NAS or PC is better.
TS mentioned that he planned to store videos for his long flight, thus he may just use a OTG USB drive to store his on-flight videos.
The maps he is planning to download when he's in Italy, should not take much of the 10+ GB available storage.

It is actually that natively Google disable SD card usage on KK. It's just that Samsung tweaked its TouchWiz UI such that it supports SD card usage.
