Hi guys,

I have been using my D-Link DIR-868L wireless router provided by StarHub since September 2014.

I have no issues with the wired and wireless connection until recently the wireless range seems to drop. Now I couldn't have a stable wireless connection while in the rooms. Router is on StarHub firmware and default settings when it was first setup. Anyone experience this issue?

Thanks

I'm on firmware 1.03SHC. It state it's the latest firmware. Is there a more updated firmware?

Router and ONT are switched on and off every time I need to use the internet. It's not switched on 24/7.

Sorry, I have no idea about the firmware version and I was merely suggesting a possible resolution..

I think if range is affected, could be a hardware problem. My old old router was also up the altar when it's range got real bad and one day, the radio just refused to start..

@renfred89, that's the latest firmware for DIR-868L. I'm using this version too.

@ahber79,Your wireless connection to your room depends on where you place the router. If you cannot adjust your router position, would suggest you get an AP or those power line product to get around the wifi limitations.

You may also try connecting using the 2.4ghz band which can travel longer distance.

Also go to the router and set the WiFi signal to maximum. Mine still at minimum as it serve me well.

the router position was the same since it was first installed. Last time have no issues connecting to wifi in my room. Though signal is not that strong but pages still able to load. However recently the signal strength is the same but pages not loading or get error message say to check my internet connection. Got to move out of the room then the connection resumes. Wifi signal is set to maximum and am using the 2.4ghz band as it's stronger a bit. Optimum channel used based on the wifi analyzer.

I am using this firmware and have good connection

http://support.dlink.com/ProductInfo.aspx?m=DIR-868L

1.Update FCC band 1 output power
2.Update mydlink agent to support SSL connection

The FCC has raised transmit power limits and eased other restrictions for some channels in the 5 GHz band.

Among changes in the Unlicensed National Information Infrastructure (U-NII) Devices in the 5 GHz Band Report and Order are changes to FCC Part 15.407(a) that increase the maximum conducted output power for access points operating in the 5.15 - 5.25 GHz band (aka Channels 36 - 48) from 50 mW to 1 W.

APs using these frequencies are also now allowed to operate outdoors at these power levels.

Will try this firmware and see whether it's better than the Starhub's version.

My own experience tells me that it is slightly better at certain distances with this firmware compared to the stock.

Give it a try as an increase in power usually means better connection.

Thanks. Wifi signal on this firmware seems stronger a bit. Need to test more. My issue is more like sometimes no internet connection even though still connected to wifi. Sometimes the connection will resume after a few minutes. Sometimes I got to turn off and on the wifi on the devices to restore back the connection. So not sure what is wrong.

I updated the 1.10 firmware. Unfortunately it doesn't support Repeater and wireless client mode though. So I can only flash it on my main router and not flash it on my repeater router. :o

How is it after your upgrade? I do not face the problem but if the firmware is good.. i will upgrade too as I do not need repeater mode. :s12:

HELP should i throw my starhub dlink 868L against the wall and replace it with an ASUS AC68 or AC87?

I'm so fed up - firmware upgrade - move the thing up and down - shift here and there - reception in the bedroom is still very patchy!
WHY! Upgrade to fibre - pay more money still suffer! Why!?

ook i'm thinking of getting an ASUS 300 dollar something router - would that change my life?
My house is only a 5 room flat - how big is it? 2 walls niah - from living room to master bedroom - how hard can that be?

I don't like extender - got one - but it's too troublesome - on and off and wait and slower speed what's the point?

Please advise - should i go for an ASUS or give DLINK STARHUB router another chance?

1st you must recognize that if your house have wifi dead spot, it is inevitable your need to use repeater or extender.

These are technologies exist to overcome the wifi short comings.

2nd Have a open mind. No one router solution will solve your home wireless problem.
Go to the internet and review what people are doing to get their problem solved rather than whine down here.

Look at this youtube, how old uncle fix his home wifi issue. Which is much bigger than a 5 room. All it takes is action speak louder than words.
1. Review Open Mesh WiFi for a Large House

2. Look at this blog, even auntie also do something to make sure her wifi issue is fixed. The Solution for Wifi Coverage Issue in the New Homes Layout

3. Lastly how I fix the wifi issue for a 3 storey terrace ?
Let me share my experience, the dlink-850l given by starhub can only cover 1st & 2nd floor and 3rd floor room nearest the router. The master bedroom at the 3rd floor totally cannot receive any wifi signal.

Since the owner is not keen to lay a cable from the main router to the to the secondary router , but is ok to lay a cable from the daughter room to the master bed room, all I need is get a Prolink 3001A, run it as a repeater extender, connect a cable from the Prolink to the PC in the master bed room. Now the owner can surf and work happily. On top of that the Prolink can provide wireless internet access for the owner to connect his mobile/tablet to it.

So do more review and get a better idea how you can plan your own solution .

While knowledge is Power
Power without action is Zero. Back to origin point.
Hope you can see where is a actual problem now.

Note : The 868L router is a high end router that is capable to cover a 2 story house.

Hi Tungsten2,

Instead of getting a new router, you can consider running LAN cables over your house; or you can consider getting Homeplugs.

As what the others say, sometimes if you have Wifi dead spots, it might be a "No-one-router-solve-all-problems", might as well spend your money more wisely than spending it all on an expensive router.
