Hi everyone, I'm planning to travel to the UK for abt 3wks to a mth in a few yrs time. Planning to visit places such as London, Scotland and the whole of uk. How much do I need to prepare roughly in total for lodging, food and transportation expenses? Thanks!

one month for the whole of uk? :s22:

how much you willing to spend on food? how are you going in between cities? bus? car rental? train? flights? hitchhike? what are you going to eat? fanciful restaurants, takeaways, sandwiches or microwavable meals? you couchsurfing, staying in hostel, BnB, hotels or camping? these will all make a difference to the budget.

Either you set out a budget and work your itinerary around it. Or set your itinerary and set your budget around it.

Thanks! Do u have an idea of how much the costs there r like for eating out, and travelling expenses? Plan to cover a few parts of UK. I will work out a more detailed itinerary for UK.

Hmm, not really. You can find microwave food £2 or less than that in stores like Iceland and Tesco. For TS, eating out is generally expensive in UK but if you dont mind eating unhealthy but cheap stuff, theres plenty of stores that offer that. Dont forget about Aldi and Lidl as well.

I plan to rent accommodation on airbnb n do home cooked food for meals? How about that,is it cheap buying ingredients in asda and sainsbury? Whats the biggest expense in uk holiday, transportation and accommodation? Planning to go Scotland and Wales too...

Not all airbnb allow cooking, do take note.

Cheaper than eating outside food but also depends on what ingredients you buying?

Transportation is costly imo. UK is huge. Think you need to decide where you wanna go first. Look up the map and see how far apart those places are and then think again.

It terms of groceries, for me at least, from cheapest to expensive: Aldi-Lidl, Tesco, Iceland, Asda, Sainsbury,Waitrose.

I would say you can expect to spend a lot on transportation if you plan to take train. Buses are cheaper but for long haul, some people might find it uncomfortable.

And yes, dont forget to bring your own bag to supermarkets. They have just implemented a 5p tax for plastic bags.

Thanks! I know trains r mainly for sightseeing of the beautiful countryside... If not maybe take budget domestic flights... As for accommodation wise outside London, it's much cheaper right?

Budget domestic flights need to take note that usually addition of baggage are quite costly. Its usually flying with just carry on that is cheap.

Suggest you go and try out and see what are the pricing. Definition of cheap different for everyone. :o

Places outside of London tend to be a bit cheaper. However, if the flat/house is near city, could be a tad expensive but not as exorbitant as London. Just a question, do you or your travel partner drive? Will be cheaper as the rent there is quite cheap especially if you are over 21.

TS, you don't seem to have a good idea of what to do in UK. There are many travel websites, you should go do some research to see the places that you want to visit.

We travel to London now and then. They have many good museums in London that are free. The parks are free to roam around too. You can take a free walking tour by Sandeman Tours. You only pay tips.

Examples of free museums.

This is the National History Museum.

This is the Imperial War Museum. Check out the Harrier Jump Jet hanging from the ceiling.

Bro, if you want to plan a DIY trip to the UK, you gotta spend more time researching the place and understanding how to get around. For your info, Greater London itself is already twice the size of Singapore. For London transport, they go by zones, which are in concentric circles. Zone 1 all the way to Zone 9, thereabouts. But even Zone 3 onwards is considered far out already. So just far out do you want to stay?

For my family, we usually stay with a budget hotel chain called Premier Inn, right smack in Zone 1. Then we will use the Tube or bus to get around.

If you want to go to other parts of UK, and you don't wish to rent a car, then it is either train, or coach or even flying.

If you like flight videos, check out this footage of London, as the plane I am on lands on a very clear day.

If you are good at booking in advance and saving and scrimming like a student, then i would say 100 sgd/day is the rough budget you are looking at. For UK, you must book your trains in advance as early as possible because the tickets can go skyrocket high on the day itself. Plan early and stick to your plan.

good day bro, you needa let us know your budget and this you might find some repeated points from me and also from other forumers. [maybe i missed it out]

- plan ur trip in advance, some trains u buy 3-6months in advance u save 50%, then till the day you will pay more.

- average spending in London, you can average lesser then 15pounds comfortably per meal. Eg, breakfast [coffee from Gregs, 3pounds + sandwich 3pounds + 2 pounds soup = lesser than 10pounds]. Lunch n dinner about the same.

- transport interally there is a day cap, you have to check in the website as for london i think for 5days zone 1-2 only for like 20+ pounds.

- if you dont mind stay in AirBnb for lodging pick there you can find rooms at 100$ in london zone 1-2, hotels are smaller and cost a bomb.

- prebook everything [attractions, train ticket] in advance and your fine.

hope this is helpful

Juz got back from UK - Stayed there for a week and spent not more than SGD1.5

If you spend wisely, 5-6K should be enough for 3weeks to a month.
