I'm travelling to a place where the temperature will be roughly -20. Any advise on what I should wear to keep warm under this kind of cold temperature?

Maybe he is going to Minnesota or Quebec in winter!

Have u experienced cold weather before?
Easier to advice if u have.

- Hat to cover ears or ear muffler
- Warm wool socks
- Boots with good traction
- Gloves
- Wool or down coat
- Wool Sweater
- Uniqlo heat tech tshirt inner
- Uniqlo heat tech leggings or thermal wear
- wool pants or wind resistant type pants

minnesota avg low can reach -20C but having lived in such places before its usually bed time, sleeping in a toasty bed! unless one is working outside at nite to 2am-5am hard to experience such temp.
even in quebec -20C is also nite time, imagine 1-3pm at -20C at nite how cold will it get!
temps usually drop by another 20C in such places. day time high of -20C nite is like -40C!

maybe visiting Snag at Yukon.. its 8pm there and temp is already at -29C today!
that cold for day time high...
better dress like going Mt Everest as its temp up there is like -20C high and low or -35C in summer!

I have been to Harbin in china... it was cold but probably not as cold as arctic circle. I'm also going out at night to see the northern lights.

I'm going to Arctic circle.

Someone is sending you there or you go on your own?

If former, they should tell you what to wear or provide it to you.

If latter - you most likely won't find anything suitable in Singapore. Rather I'd suggest to look at http://www.rei.com/ and see what suits you there.

P.S. it won't be cheap. Expect to spend at least US $1000 on clothing only. Footwear is another matter.

Latitude is just one factor; whether you're inland, the altitude etc also plays a part. So, at arctic circle or beyond doesn't mean will be colder than harbin etc

Of course, if you feel cold in whatever you're wearing in harbin, then yeah, you need better clothings =:p
This include your head, hands, and feet.

Fact Harbin nightly low avg is -24C, Arctic circle is like -30c. Latitude or altitude does matter but recorded avg does show it's colder.

Harbin winter is cold but didn't go hang out after 11pm but in hotel how to experience low of -20C.

One can go super cold planet but camp out in warm room with skylight window to watch the sky. Who really cares external temp when it's warm inside

Other than this listing, please bring a lot of chemical warmers (if you need to stand outside without shelter for a period of time). Boot should be able to protect below -20 deg if possible. Oh, and a buff as well, I don't think the above covers your neck and relying only on your jacket to cover it is not good enough.

I'm back! Had a super enjoyable time. Yes, I used like 6 packets of chemical warmers all over my body to keep warm. Found the temperature to be bearable. Realised that good gloves, beanies and socks are damn important.

Thank you all for your suggestions and recommendations.

I can now tick one item off my bucket list - seeing the aurora borealis!

how did you deal with the northern lights? any issues with battery management and how long can you remain glove-less while taking photos?

Not sure what do you mean by dealing with Northern Lights...

Your battery should last longer than you out in that cold (unless you are using sony which sucks battery power like nobody's business). I never had issues with battery (using Nikon, 1 battery last the whole night) but I had issues with the cold especially my fingers and feet.
I had a thinner glove so that I could work on the camera without being gloveless, but I have chemical warmer in each of the glove to help battle the cold. When I am not fiddling with the camera, the hands are all in the jacket!

Chemical warmer was the only thing I missed out on my last trip - did not expect the temp to drop to -12degC (windchill factor included) during the night. But it was a life saver when I was out in -34degC in my previous trip.
