SC disabled :D

If you disabled SC and use say 5GHz-1 would it later steer you to 2.4GHz or 5GHz-2 and vice versa depending on your usage if you have many devices turned on?

Use of SC will auto steer your device to a particular band depending on usage

If you disable it will not do steering.

With Smart Connect enabled, in the Smart Connect pull-down menu, there is an option to choose "5GHz Smart Connect" , this is in addition to "Tri-band Smart Connect" option.

Wonder what this 5GHz Smart Connect option does? Only steer between the two 5GHz ? between 5GHz-1 & 5GHz-2? :s11:

to me the band steering between the 5Ghz bands is more useful than including the 2.4Ghz..

hi renfred89,

can help me to understand how is this more useful than including the 2.4GHz? thank you! :s22:
Anyway can give a try to see if it does only steering between the 5Ghz bands ... to confirm that it does not drop to 2.4Ghz ... but only move between 5-1 and 5-2 ..

Please screenshot the conversation regarding this and post here what actually your question is?

If i remember correctly, you are saying your phone is associated with the 2.4GHz outside your gate and your phone not able to switch to 5GHz (within 5GHz range) which you wanted.

When does 2x5GHz banding not possible? Did we mentioned it on the conversation?

By definition, does 1x 5GHz and 2x 5GHz banding matter? your phone will not be able to associated with the 2.4GHz outside your gate totally until you are within your 5GHz.

Is this what you want? by all means and do so if you wanted it.

And stop analing @ my thread. Your NetGear R8500 thread is that way.

its my own personal preference. My rationale is that, if you leave your devices at 2.4Ghz, then likely you already know its slow. therefore you don't need the 5Ghz. If your devices are fast, likely you only want 5Ghz, so its kinda pointless if it steers your devices to 2.4Ghz just because the RSSI is low..

Therefore, I believe the 5Ghz is still faster than 2.4Ghz in most scenarios of low RSSI..

Agree with you. 2.4Ghz definitely has further reach. things like mobile phone doesnt need the 5ghz speed. 2.4 is more than enough to run 2K resolution YouTube video.

For PC, you would want to have the fastest speed so you won't want your router to switch to 2.4 while downloading a file.

Having 2 5Ghz band is good when you have multiple PC/device that is connected. your router will let your gaming PC to solo one 5Ghz band while all the rest connected to 5Ghz-2. This is just an example. how the actual band steering algorithm works will have to let Asus or Maylyn to explain.

Asus gives users a choice to steer over 3 bands or just the 2 x 5GHz bands, and more options is a good thing. Different people need different setups.
Last time the Linksys EA9200 and Netgear R8000 can only steer between the 2 x 5Ghz bands, users don't have the choice to include the 2.4GHz band.

I have 2x SAMSUNG Note 4 on Singtel COMBO 6 plan. One is on the main line and the other on supplementary line. When tested at 1 m away from the AC5300 the main line shows its on 5GHz whilst the supplementary line Note 4 is on 2,4GHz. I used the mobile ASUS Router app to determine this. Even after deleting the WiFi profile in the supplementary line Note 4 and have it reconnected it's still on 2.4GHz. This happens also when I was on my previous AC3200 router. I'm using Smart Connect all the while,

Like to explain why?

Don't see how your mobile plan affects the Wi-Fi connectivity. If you really think it is that, remove the sim card and test.

Are you on Tri-band Smart Connect or 5GHz Smart Connect? and 5GHz-1+5GHz-2? settings?

You should have only one SSID for 2.4GHz and another SSID for 5GHz and not a common SSID both for 2.4GHz and (5GHz-1+5GHz-2). Refer to above.

Lastly re-check your second Note 4 is associated with which SSID?

I only have 1 SSID for all and I'm on Tri-band Smart Connect for I do have some 2.4GHz devices as well
