Can I ask what is the cheapest way to get to Penang? I see online bus ticket is around $75 per trip...

Would it be cheaper if I go JB Sentral and take bus from there? Or Larkin bus terminal? Or anywhere I can use malaysian bus to penang?

I also thinking of renting cars in Penang to drive about instead of relying on taxis... anyone done it before and any recommended car rental?

taking bus would be the cheapest, but you would spend a long time on the bus.

I drove my own car and rented a car there before. I rented from "Big thumb rent a car". You can google for it. As i rented the cheapest car, i cannot comment very much on the quality as the price is really cheap...75rm for 1 day. the car moves, is decently clean and came with a free umbrella. THeir service is quite good though.

do note that big thumb don't have a booth in the airport (if you decide to fly there), but they will drive you to their office when u reach the airport.

Cheapest way to Penang will be coach from Larkin, if you've hours upon hours to spare.

Or if you manage to get one of the $0 airfare from one of the budget airlines during promotions, paying only the taxes?

Around Penang, you can take the buses too, coupled with some walking. :)

Bus - up to 12 hours (depends on traffic)
Flight- 1+ hr

The time saved alone is worth taking a flight I think- jetstar, tiger, air asia all fly there

the problem is... flight ticket alone to penang cost more than than the return tickets combined... I was thinking of travelling throughout the night so can sleep in the coach...

So going to larkin indeed cheaper? does anyone know how much does it cost exactly?

Use Easibook.com to find out. For origin, use JB Larkin Terminal.
There may still be some services originating from JB Merlin Tower. Nearer to the CIQ, but coaches originating from there may still go to Larkin anyway.

Easy, other than the traffic and narrow streets. Many of the old streets are one way, so get your bearings right.

Lousy timing for KTM service from JB Sentral to Butterworth. TS will waste daylight hours on the train. The new Penisular Express does not stop at Butterworth for its route to Thailand, otherwise ideal because it passes through Butterworth at sunrise.

It's the classic way to go there. Supposing at least 2nd class on the train, can still sleep flat on a bunk as well as have access to amenities and can walk around if legs feel numb. And then can choose whether to take bus across penang bridge or ferry across. Downside is the travelling time required.

Yes, dangerous for you. Take coach from KL Sentral, or hail a taxi from the stand.
