B & W TV started in 1963 in Sg. Colour TV introduced in 1974. What brand is yours? RCA, Thomson, Motorola, Telefunken, Graetz, Pye (yes, no mistake) or something else?

Other than capacitors and resistors, there may be problem getting the spare parts.

My sharp TV just died on me last night. Was watching TV halfway suddenly it auto shut down. There after I keep turning the main switch off and on, and sometimes it can power up.

Tried this morning, and got a loud POP sounds and didn't dare to try again.

Is it worth it to repair? I got it for $1098 3 years back. I can't find the warranty slip but shld be around 3 years 2 months so just out of warranty period.

Called Sharp and they quote me $160 just for repair and diagnostic. Not including cost of spare parts replacement.

Called those third party repair they quite me $200+.

Any advice is sincerely appreciated!

The problem may come back after 12 mths. What is your TV size?
If it is just a 40'' Tv, do not see the point of repairing it as new Tv is quite cheap and has new features. You can consider LG 4K Tv, 43UF640T which is below $1,000.

Thank You Henry for your advice.

I use it mainly to watch movies and play PS4. My Tv is 40inch Sharp, lcd with Led back-lit and comes with 3D. I guess it overheated and died because of extensive usage. Is there any TV to recommend for long usage without overheating? Sorry for the unusual request as people usually don't view this as a competitive benefit. I do not need UHD, just Full HD (ps4 and most movies don't come in 4k) and if possible, with 3D as I still had some original 3D disc which dunwan them to go to waste.

Any kind advice is deeply appreciated!

Honestly LG full HD 3D is dead. Very little people watch 3D that often so it slowly die off. Now LG only has UHD 3D which is at least $2K+ or may be buy other brand. Other brand may still have FHD 3D Tv.

Mine is a Hitachi P20. My parent's first TV set and I would like to restore it. its can be switched in but the image only fills half the screen..audio all still working.

The deflection coil, through aging, is now unable to provide the full voltage that's required to deflect the electron beams to fill the whole screen.

Well, if you treat it like an antique, you can pay to restore it to it's former glory just like those antique piano owned by Beethovan or Chopin, for example.

Edit: If you can somehow dig up the circuit diagram, it will be very useful for the project. Just an idea, maybe you can approach one of the polys and ask the students to do it as a project.

LG TV problem after 3 years

Hi! My LG 42LW5700 tv red power light keeping blink every one second with no image and no sound. Can pm me the price of how much will this kind of repair cost? Purchased on Jan 2012. Called the repair centre and was told 139.10 to come down to check. Thanks !

I had a similar problem on my 42LW5700, so it appear that LG TV is well engineer to fail after 3 years. I notice several respondent having the similar failure with 47LW5700 and 55LW5700 which uses the same mainboard. This symptom is the result of the mainboard failure which needs replacement.

Moreover, LG has stopped selling parts. This means that part replacement will need their service (whether you need it does not matter). I am going to avoid LG TV for all future purchases.

damn i am also having the same problem on my 47lw6500 which was purchase around end 2011. 3-4 years lifespan of a motherboard is ridiculous. i had my old LG plasma of >10years and another 5 years old 42" LG led tv still running strong. don't LG should void away part of the service cost if they recognize that this is a motherboard epidemic problem?

Nowadays it is hard to get one that lasts.
