The words might have been spoken by Shrewsbury Town’s boss Micky Mellon this week but he said that no-one discovers if they are cut out for football management unless they have lived it.

Giggs hasn’t yet. For me, he needs to sever his attachment. Go and find out if he can cut it in the game without being tied to the apron-strings at his only club.

If the power-brokers plump for Mourinho’s experience the Portuguese will want his own men around him. And if Giggs is over-looked again, he needs to accept that the time may never be right.

Far better for his own legacy as a player to remain untouched until he is ready.

If Giggs proves himself away from Old Trafford, then surely he will have earned the right one day to return.
