Taxi Driver in HK Loses Consciousness While Driving, Passengers Struggle to Stop Vehicle
At around noon on Monday (28 September), a taxi carrying passengers crashed into a concrete barrier on Cheung Sha Wan’s Cheung Cheung Road after its 66-year-old driver lost consciousness. A dashcam video from inside the taxi circulated online today, showing the driver becoming unconscious while the vehicle was in motion. The four passengers on board called out to him in alarm and even patted his cheeks and arms, but he remained completely unresponsive.
The taxi continued moving without anyone in control for more than half a minute, swerving from side to side in an extremely dangerous manner. Fortunately, the passengers eventually managed to bring the vehicle to a stop. The taxi scraped against a concrete barrier, after which the frightened passengers hurriedly sought assistance.
There were three female passengers and one male passenger in the taxi. The video, which lasts approximately 53 seconds, begins with the driver’s head and both hands already hanging down as he sits unconscious at the wheel. At first, the passengers did not realise what had happened. It was only when the vehicle began swaying that they became aware that something was wrong.
The male passenger in the front seat and the female passenger seated in the middle of the rear seat immediately tried to rouse the driver. They patted his arm and cheek respectively, but he showed no response whatsoever. The passengers appeared visibly frightened.
With no one controlling the taxi, it continued swerving from side to side, causing the four passengers to be thrown against one another and creating an extremely dangerous situation. They reached forward in an attempt to control the steering wheel and pull the handbrake. After approximately half a minute, they finally managed to bring the taxi slowly to a stop.
The passengers then waved to passing motorists for assistance, at which point the video ends.
