1.5k rig for work

Hi, building for a friend, as i'm not familiar with his field of work, would like to check with fellow builders here on whether the suggested build is sufficient for his work.

Softwares to work with: Adobe illustrator , photoshops , keyShot, Rhino , Autodesk inventor

Currently using laptop Asus N550J Win 8 x64, i7-4700HQ, 16GB RAM, gtx 750m

CPU+MOBO: Intel i7-7700 + Gigabyte B250M-D3H (mATX) ~ $593
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2400MHz CL14 16GB (8GB x 2) ~ $199
SSD: Samsung Evo 850 250GB ~ $159
HDD: WD Black 1TB ~ $112
GPU: ??
DVDRW: Any ~ $25
PSU: ??
CASE: Corsair 400C ATX ~ $158
OS: Win 10 Home x64 ~ $??

Total: $1246 (Prices taken from PCT)

1) Dont need OC, using stock intel cooler
2) Is the cpu+mobo ok? Any other recommendations? The mATX board would have no issues with the ATX case right?
3) Could actually go for 120GB SSD but dont see it around price lists
4) Could possibly go for WD Blue 1TB? But is the 5400rpm an issue?
5) Should in future user decided to go for 32GB RAM, simply just purchase another set of dual channel memory and add-on would do? Or is a quad channel kit necessary? Then again the mobo dont support quad channel, please advice.
6) Any other case recommendation? Rig put on floor, good to have front i/o on top instead of front. User requires the use of a DVDRW, i find that most cases nowadays do away with the front panel slot for a DVDRW. Will opt-ing to go for an external dvdrw via usb be a better option?
7) Would a gtx 1060 be sufficient/overkill for the above work?
8) Any recommended seller for OS? From carousell?

2) Would suggest R7-1700 + ASUS Prime B350M-A (I'm not sure the importance of the number of cores on the performance of those softwares. But imo Ryzen's extra cores would give it an advantage). mATX board works fine with ATX case.

3) Got PNY/OCZ 120GB SSD in PCT pricelist

4) WD Blue 1TB is fine, don't need Black unless you want the extra 2-year warranty. Performance-wise you won't really notice the difference.

5) If want to upgrade to 32GB in future, can just purchase another 16GB kit.

6) If you want to put internal DVD drive, can take a look at Fractal Design Define R5. Otherwise, Fractal Design Define C/Mini C & Phanteks P400 TG are good mATX cases, but you will need external DVD drive.

7) I'm not too sure about that.

8) Just search for one with decent user reviews, should be fine.

One 250gb for os for programs, another 500gb for current work and projects and scratch disk. Another hdd for storage.

Intel cpu and gigabyte mobo is personal preference if budget allows for

Yes for work. Care to elaborate why you sound doubtful? Is there any components or unnecessary features I might have bundled in which wont be utilized for his usage?

From what i know his laptop(Home use) serves his work well currently. The issue is that it is faulty now thus hes considering a desktop instead of buying a new laptop.

I have no knowledge in what his work demands of the various hardware components.

Care to further elaborate on the 2x SSD + HDD? From what i know of his current laptop only has a 1TB HDD and seems sufficient for his work. He do have some portable HDDs for extra storage/backup for work.

By any gpu will, does that mean any 1060 gpu or does that mean even a 1060 isnt required? Maybe older gpus like 750 ti, 960? Will those even be sufficient to do the job?

anything will be sufficient for his work even his current laptop.
if his upgrading to desktop might as well make full use of it?

reasons 2 ssd for photoshop for photoshop user,
the ssd will slow down when its near out of space, ie 80~90% ish.
the work ssd driver is for current stuff, anytime he done with it, just dump it into the hdd to free up some space. also it is recommended to keep Scratch disks on a different drive other than the os drive.

250gb ssd as main os are fine, but i dont think he can keep his works file all into it without making it filled to the brim. working them from hdd is just a little bit slower, but mainly on opening multiple files at the same time.

those program u listed hardly use any gpu compute, the gpu mainly is for "redraw" onto the display. I.e smoother pan and scrolling, for rhino viewport will be sharper and rotating etc will be smoother, but modelling is cpu compute, not sure what your friend uses for rendering though.

a 2nd hand 970 is not a bad idea if he doesnt game at all, 10xx series might have problem with some of the older software. my 1070 was crashing my old 3d max non stop when rendering, had to use my surface pro to render instead. Its better you google for the gpu for the specific program, 10xx series are known to not work well with older ver of 3d max.

Pardon me but will a bigger SSD say 500GB solve the issue instead of 2x 250?

For gpu how about a 1050? Since not demanding on gpu, probably put the money elsewhere..

depends on his total file size, just make sure its only about 80~85% filled per ssd.

he can even try igpu first, if he feesl the redraw on monitor is sluggish then get a 970 2nd hand.
