Is anyone using this machine? Visually, it is a gorgeous machine. But the reviews from major tech sites are not positive.

Different types of MacBooks for different needs. I do photo-editing so I find the 12" MacBook lacking processing power and screen size is a bit too small.

the lack of ports and imo the keyboard takes some bit of getting used to it
its really only good for the portability

Depending on the user's needs and how you are going to use the machine.

I read that casual photo editing is still acceptable though I have yet to try. Of course, it will be under powered if I use the MB for for some serious photo and video editing. I have my MBP for that.

It serves me well for online surfing, emails, watching YouTube and working with word documents with great portability.

As for the absence of ports, I don't really use external storages based on my usage. If I need to, my documents can be readily saved to and retrieved from the internal storage or cloud services.

I use it to compliment my iMac. My heavy duties work all done on my iMac while my rMB allows me to do documentation and other light work like coding off desk or for meetings.

Hey guys. Need advice for a lappie that I would need for school starting in August.

I'll be studying Biz so I guess the laptop will be used mainly for reports and presentations. And for leisure stuff like going on Youtube, watching videos, surfing the net, etc. Not so much of gaming (don't think I would even have time for that) or video-editing and stuff like that.

Prefer a lightweight laptop with impressive battery life as well; don't want to be lugging an extra charger to school.

Any recommendations? Since we definitely can't get away from Excel, Powerpoint and Word, how do Mac users go about overcoming this difficulty? Is "Office for Mac" efficient?

I've been using Office for Mac 2011 since 2010 and yes it's great. Now I'm just waiting for the 2016 version to be officially launched.

For your needs, perhaps a MBA will be of a better choice.

Hi thx for reply, appreciate it. But somehow I feel the design of MBP looks more polished than MBA haha! Like the screen and bezel at the sides.. mba is grey which I feel is less attractive than mbp's black..

Another factor is the MBP has a retina display while MBA is not.

If you have been using retina iPad for long and being used to the sharp and crisp texts, you may find that the display on MBA is lacking.

I see... still skeptical whether using Mac will bring about some difficulties in school as compared to Windows. Have any experiences?

If u really like MBP then take the 13" one for your needs, though it'll cost more than the MBA. The Pro version as the name states, is more premium as cost increases.

No issues using the Office for Mac 2011 and opening via my office Windows computer and vice versa. Format is the same.

Hi i found this online. So basically you can just save any Pages document into a Word format. Does that mean Office for Mac is not very necessary? Since Mac has Numbers.. pages.. etc.

MS Office software works a little different from iWorks but I haven't tried viewing a file saved on Pages to Word but have the other way round. MS Office is more universal and more widely used so I would still prefer to use MS Office over iWorks.

Thanks for ur input. I searched online and found out theres this "Office 365 University" at $109 for 4 years of subscription and can install to 2 devices (windows and macs). Think thats a pretty good deal.

I always believed in paying subscription for something u use often. To me I seldom use Office software now so I wouldn't pay for Office 365. But in another note, I'm currently paying Adobe Creative Cloud subscription at S$13 per month as I do photo-editing, hence using Lightroom and Photoshop.

Btw which storage do you think is appropriate for me, 128 or 256? For rMBP.
Mostly light user... school reports, presentations, leisure music and videos etc. But can always use an external harddisk for such.
Any advise? Thx.
