I know this might be damn obvious. Can I plug in a 5v RGB led into a 12v header on the motherboard or is it going to fried my led.

I believe your 12v header will fry the 5v LED instantly since the LED can only accept 5v?

Yeah I thought so. The stupid me went ahead and bought a 5v without checking the motherboard. Asus Maximus ix code has 2 12 v header only...sigh

Your led will be fried. If suay, your 12v header will damage.

If it is cheap, just take it as lesson learnt and buy 12V LED strips. Even if not cheap, nothing you can do except to buy 12v led strips. Lol.

Unless u place a resistor to drop the 12V to 5V which im not sure what will happen to the LEDs.

LEDs are current controlled device, not voltage controlled device. Whether you can use 12v from the motherboard header depends on the circuitry of the LED (if any).

Check the specification of the LED, regardless of 5v or 12v, you still need a resistor to limit the forward current to the LED. Running a LED with typical 25ma current with no limit forward current source will instantly fried the LED. For tri-colour LED bulb, you need 3 resistors, one to each of the VCC of the LEDs and leave the GND alone without resistor.

Trivia: 12V LED strips usually have a resistor inside and are designed to run from, erm, what's said inside the name.

Trivia2: The connector on the motherboard literally says +12V on pin1. You can actually find a +5V source from somewhere and use that to power your LED instead. The other 3 pins still go to the motherboard.

Or,

Unless u place a resistor to drop the 12V to 5V which im not sure what will happen to the LEDs.

This works too. More wasted power but still negligible. Shouldn't be too hard to calculate the values you need.

Use a 12V to 5V regulator like LM7805 is better.
But PC has 5V connector too. Why not use the 5V directly?

Lol, TS have to figure out how to do this i supposed. Easier way would be to just buy a new one for 12V.

PC rgb header uses 12V instead of 5V, so bo bian.

what is really the differences between the 5v and 12v led? My MSI B450 comes with only 1 5v but 2 12v.

5v usb is dimmer than 12v. Current dictates how bright they will be. Depends on length as well.

This video will explain the differences
Basically both of them the headers have different signal. Plugging 5V rgb into 12v will fry your 5v strip. Plugging 12v into 5v will not fry it, but it won't work.
Using the msi b450 as well with a 5v rgb hub for my 6 5v rgb fans and 2 led strips

trying to increase the number of led lights in my PC, how many LED can the MB 5v header support?
I currently got a PHANTEKS Halos, and a 40cm (30 led) strip attached.
