12v RGB strip recommendations

Hi all,

It has been a long time i have not checked on RGB strips for pc case.

I currently have the Lian Li Unifans and 3 custom watercooling components that uses 5v ARGB. All 3 are connected to a single Aura Sync ARGB from mobo. I measured the output current, it was drawing somewhere near 0.9A and 1A when it is running rainbow etc.

I would wanted to add another roughly 90cm ARGB strips. But i felt that i should not stress that single ARGB header.

Currently im on Cablemod RGBWUV led strip. Its a bit dated, very big as it has dedicated white and dedicated UV leds, hence it is too wide till it doesnt fit in my lian li o11 mini well. It is using a remote control to control the lightings.

I have a 12V RGB header and i thought of using it. What is everyone using now for 12v RGB? Do you all connect it direct and use motherboard software to control? Or you prefer to connect it via an external controller and use usb 2.0 connect to the board and use an external software to control it?

I use a EK hub which is a fan AND 4-pin ARGB header. All my ARGB including my Phanteks Neon strips are plugged into it. It's great.

You can power the ARGB strip using sata or molex while maintaining control using your motherboard header.

Hi royfrosty, you can ignore my pm as when I see this thread, I think should share this piece of information. It's going to be lengthy.

now there is a big difference between your RGBWUV and RGB. your strip have 2 functions. basic RGB + UV
you will need a controller for that before you plug it to the Sata or Molex of your PSU. you cannot plug to your motherboard as the voltage and ampere might be different. Please note that your strip can be up to 18volts and not 12volts or 5volts. thats why you have a block (controller) which steps up the voltage and to provide proper ampere.

as for normal RGB, it's 12 volts, you can plug it directly to your motherboard, if you choose to plug to your PSU sata or molex, you need a RGB controller.

I know there are a couple of peeps going crazy daisy chaining their Uni Fans, ws2812b led strip, strimmer plus and galahad pump to the uni fan controller, without knowing that for short term, not an issue but for long time, you will fry your unifan controller.
If you do want to connect all those properly, is either you get the lian li argb cable kit / you can choose to crimp it yourself if you know how.

for those not viewing, please note. RGB and aRGB/DRGB have different voltage and pinouts
RGB = 12volts 4pin = (12v+) (Green) (Red) (Blue)
some RGB are 5volts where you can plug to your USB socket.

ARGB / DRGB = 5volts 3pin = (5v+) (Data In/Out) (GND)

there are no difference between ARGB (Addressable Red Blue Green) or DRGB (Digital Red Blue Green)

this DRGB naming is form by PC manufacture like Phanteks and etc companies.

as for 1A 2A and 3A, please refer to your motherboard specification. most boards are at 3A but some are at 2A (low end boards) so do not just plug your RGB strips or daisy chained your fan's argb to your argb motherboard header without knowing how much a strip or fan is drawing.

Simple solution is to buy the idcooling HA-01 ARGB+PWM fan hub. $20+/-

Thank you all for the recommendations. And thank you KleoZy for the detailed explainations. I think the safest route i would go is to use a splitter with sata powered.
