Hi, guys!

I'm looking to buy a gaming setup (PC or PS4).
I am wondering if a $1,300 gaming PC with the following setup will be more value for money than PS4.
I'll be playing games like GTA 5, Just Cause 3, Need for Speed and Uncharted 4 (if I get PS)

CPU: Intel Core i5 6500
Motherboard: MSI H170A PC Mate
GPU: GeForce GTX 960
RAM: Crucial 2x4GB DDR4-2133 CL15
SSD: Crucial MX200 250GB
HDD: Toshiba 2TB
Case: Corsair Carbide 100R Silent Edition
PSU: EVGA 500B

Three things I am looking to seek your opinion on are:
  1. How well this PC will perform on current gen games
  2. How long this setup will last until it will get outdated
  3. Is getting PC worth it with the additional $800 considering 1 & 2?

PS4 is cheaper ($500) and likely to last longer, but the frame rates...

I would love to hear what you think on this!

1) The Specs is ok to play the current gen games, but not as smooth as u want it to be.
2)Probably going to last u for like at least 2 years.
3)Always more worth it to get a PC, as there are more functions & you just need to upgrade your PC instead of getting a new machine like for e.g the playstation series.

PC have multiple purpose for work and games. Gtx 960 itself is enough to beat ps4 in terms of graphics performance. But of course ps4 games are better optimised than PC version. Based on nvidia GPU roadmap, most likely outdated by 2018 if you are into high end gaming.

It depends what games you want to play. For me, consoles are mainly for the exclusive titles, i.e. not available on the PC. When you mentioned last longer, I don't actually agree. In fact, I feel that you are suffering longer since the dated hardware may make the game less enjoyable, i.e. dropped frames, poorer visuals. Also, games purchased for a console usually don't work on a new generation console. So the money is pretty much wasted, especially those purchase on the Playstation Store.

Overall, the PC may seem more expensive, but if you look under the hood, the PC is significantly more versatile and powerful than the PS4. If you purchase a PC game say on Steam, you may also buy it at a significantly lower price than in the Playstation store.

I vote goes to PC for sure.

Thank you all for your input. What if I replace the 960 with 970? Would that give any difference in its ability to play the next generation games at let's say... 40-50 fps for years to come?

By the way, you can consider getting the graphic card from places like Qoo10 or Lazada. For example, Qoo10 may periodically have 100 bucks coupon which you can offset from your purchase. This way, you can get a better graphic card, or spend less on your build. From my opinion, after some research awhile back, I feel the GTX 960 4GB variants are actually not very good in value if you compare its performance vs price.

Depends on the resolution and settings, but a GTX 970 should manage most games based on current releases. If you are fine with some graphic compromise, it should last a couple of years.

The only advantage ps4 have over a decent pc is the exclusives. Imo, get ps4 if u really want games like bloodborne, unchartered...etc.

Multiplat games tend to include pc nowadays. Ffxv will be on pc too, just later.
Otherwise pc is better. It has much more solid f2p titles such as LoL, dota2, various mmorpgs. Also tend to have more discounts for games.

$1300 should be able to get better GPU.

I would recommend you get PS4 if you want budget gaming though.

Games are optimised for consoles so games are you are far less likely to have technical issues (like game crashes) on the PS4, and unlike PC, there are no hackers online when you play on the PS4.

Other than these 2 advantages, I'd say that the PC > PS4 in every other way. I think hardcore gamers are more likely to go PC for the better graphics, while consoles appeal more to casuals who want a fuss free plug and play solution.

If you have time and really care about maximising the experience then go PC.

But for many people, myself included, console gaming for sure. I have a much bigger 60" TV and amplifier/surround sound set up, I sit further away on a nice OSIM chair, and I don't like having to mess around with patches/tweaks/etc. Someone else has spent ages optimising the experience for my hardware and whilst it may not sound powerful on a spec sheet vs a new gaming PC, I'll probably get a better experience out of the box than many others would.

Yes games and online gaming costs more on a console (vs. the marginal cost on a PC) but I enjoy not having to think too much and when I want to play, it just works. I do give credit to Steam/Origin/GOG/etc for making gaming a bit more competitively priced though and if you have a high speed internet connection then downloading games isn't really an issue.

The PC games I like to play (namely CS & Simcity) aren't too demanding on specs so I can play on my Surface Pro 4; and the rest I play on console using a much better controller for fighting/driving/RPG games and sitting in a more comfortable position.

Of course the console can't do much else but this works on the assumption you are only interested in gaming rather than versatility.

(on a side note, I started using my Xbox One for media streaming since out of all my devices hooked into my TV including a WDTV Live, PS4 and Apple TV; it's the only one which can play 265 video streamed from my NAS)

the question i ask myself these days are where my friends mostly online at and what do they own. alot of my friends have moved on to the almost hassle free console gaming and i am no different.

This does not apply if you are not a social/multiplayer gamer, but still worth a thought

As an old school gamer myself, the real question should not be which is better but rather what games do you intend to play?

QUESTION 1: What games do you intend to play?
Consoles do have a hand on exclusive titles
Eg: To play Gran Turismo, one will go for PS4
or Dance Evolution / Dance Central on Xbox Kinect.

Certain titles such as Street Fighter arr multi-platform and exists on both consoles and PC.

To quote a personal experience
i play mainly PC games
I bought PS3 just for GT4
I got Xbox360 Kinect Just for Dance Evolution/ Dance Central.
PCs mainly for everything else.

And for the older gamers
NEO GEO for KOF / AOF / SS
Sega Saturn for 2D fighting games
PSX for Ridge Racer / GT / Final Fantasy

You can see the trend.

Graphics wise, PCs generally will be the preferred choice if one is into pixel peeoping or wnts 144hz goodness.

Maintenance wise,PCs are generally easier to break down coz of USER ERROR. You cannot customise a PS or XBOX as much as a PC can. So the law of numbers simply puts that the PC will be more prone to breakdowns coz users fiddle around with it more.

So don't ask which is better
look to see what types of games you like to play most. Then settle on it.
Then get the others when you have more funds so you have the best of all worlds. :)
