2015 is probably going to be a good year for us PC consumer. Alot of release seem to be push (or rushed) to next year, include new technologies, fabrication and interface. Long story short we can build an all-in-one badass PC with the newest hardware.
CPU - Intel Skylake + Broadwell (April 2015 onward)
It sound abit weird, but that is what is going to happen if intel followed its roadmap for 2015. Broadwell K CPU will be release in early 2015, and then followed by Intel Skylake mainstream CPU by April. These 2 CPUs were be using 2 different architecture hence you can expect a different chipset Motherboard supporting these. Wikipedia and other sources claim that the S-variant Skylake CPU will be release first. In other word, the desktop variants will come (6th gen I5/I7) before the mobile part. Dont get too excited though, these new skylake CPU are locked processor although it is socket 1151 based. The unlocked version wont be out till late 2015 or 2016.
Expect big performance boost for Skylake over Haswell/Broadwell. Here are some of the interesting feature of Skylake (from wikipeida)
The most notable feature might be the new 512 bits instruction AVX 512F. Cache size are also getting a good bump from L1 to L3 with an addition of 128MB L4 eDRAM. Other feature include support for advanced technology such as DDR, new Apline thunderbolt, USB 3.1, Jacksonville LAN and Douglas Peak. Last but not least, They are ditching the FIVR concept in their skylake, which is one of the heat contributor for haswell CPU. Who knows, the good days for overclocking might return.
P.S: Don't be surprise to see vendor selling I7-5770K and 6770 side by side. there is a chance it might happen.
P.P.S: AMD is also going back to the drawing board for its CPU future plan, they are planning to ditch their current CMT design and revert back to their old SMT. AMD might revealed this new CPUs in 2015.
GPU - 20nm Maxwell / Bermudas (mid 2015)
Nothing new to this as they were supposed to be release this year, yet was subsequently delayed thanks to TSMC poor yield. Pushing back to 2015 is not a bad thing though since you can hoot all the new stuff together.
Not sure how great the 20nm GPU will be, but dont be surprised to see 4K-5K cores GPU offerings from both camp (We have already come across rumor of 4224 cores R9 390X). Pricing wise though, I am definitely looking forward to red camp.
P.S: GTX 880 might be release by end of the year. you can get a good gauge on how the next generation 20nm variant will perform.
OS - Window 9 (Expected launch: April 2015)
If there is anything history teach us, it's that we shouldn't get too hyped up over new MS OS, which has proven 50% time to be quite a failure. Yet this time things were a little difference for Window 9, after the recent panic over the Chinese government banned window 8 fiasco, Microsoft decided to put Window 9 back to the drawing board and drastically change some of it core design. One thing that is worth noting, they might be ditching Metro theme for PC version of window 9. Nothing been confirm so far as security has tighten over Window 9 leaks recently. But as far as I know, The enterprise edition of Win 9 does the ability to turn off cloud and disabled the metro theme completely.
The good? The old familar aero theme may be coming back, which to me, is probably the best upgrade from window 7.
Others
DDR 4 Ram and new SSD based on SATA express interface. I am specially interested on the latter since the newer SSD no longer get bottleneck by the old SATA 3 interface. Really looking forward to new offering like Samsung 850s and the like using the new interface.
2015 is quite an exciting year if you are looking forward to build a new desktop.
