As we enter the last day of 2021.

How is everyone investment doing? My US high growth tech portfolio return is lower as compared to QQQ, SPY after a spectacular 2020 return.. 3/4 of my holding is currently in the red -20% to -35% while my top position Tesla perform extremely well in 2020 and 2021.

Congrats! 2020 is like once in a generation kind of year. Such years happens only 2 or 3 times in our lifetimes. So good for people who made the best out of it and hopefully they were able to put in enough money and made a fortune. Percentages are deceptive, if you were young and you put 100k, you make only 200k. If you were middle aged and you put in 1m you make 2m that is a life changing amount. I am interesting in knowing how many people made life changing amounts last year?

One of my UT investment portfolio. If not for China this year, I should be all green color and definitely more than 74.37 But having gone through so many years including 2008 and then 2019 one lesson I have learnt is to always keep your portfolio diversified.

Profit: 75,102.84
Profit %: 74.37

China UT all very red color (except 1)
-15.19%
-18.42%
124.58% <- this is special as I invested way back in year 2000, indirectly helping to cushion some of my more recent China UT losses

2022 will be the year I dabble more into ETF (hopefully I am profitable in this too keeping my fingers crossed). Hopefully by the time I retire at age 62 (10+ years to go) I am ok financially. By that time some of my endowment and protection insurance policies should also "mature" (I no pay any more premiums) soon. Increase medical insurance I am not so sure as I pay so many years premium never get to utilize it so I am subsidizing other ppl instead!!! They really should reduce premium for ppl who never claim before isn't it? Think govt provided is enough for me.

Yup. I went into US market at the right time in March 2020 when the crash happen. This was the best decision. leaving behind lousy SG market and started investing in us market.

Very nice. I only started investing in Sep 2020, heng still managed to capture the 2nd half of the gains before Covid. Even though I'm mostly DCA-ing, I still managed to squeeze out about 12.55% gain from all my Endowus Portfolio.

I had been waiting since 2009 for the 2020 sale. The 2016 was a mini-sale which was also good for my portfolio (STI ETF under $3), but it wasn't the one I was I waiting for. :s13:

Next week I'll be able to calculate my whole year dividends/passive income + CPF interest. Should be decent. 📈

I made 600k in 2021, not life changing but good enough for me. I will be happy making 600k per year over the next 5 years. :giggle:

Been quite a rough year for me, had several 3+% daily DDs during the year as the market went nuts so I'm just happy to do slightly better than full passive investors in the end.

Got a feeling that next year is going to be even tougher so I intend to scale down the size of my account, even though there's no real alternative to stocks right now.

I just finished my calculations.
Below are my numbers for 2021 and estimates for 2022.
The estimates are mainly for me to plan the allocation ratio I wish to achieve.
My current allocation is 45% and my plan is to hit 60% by end of next year.
2021 I managed to make 11% returns on investment and overall networth grew 18%.

For 2022, I am being conservative and estimating 6% returns on investment and 11.5% overall networth growth.

I plan to do value averaging into equities and get from 576k to 860k.
So the final amount of 860k is fixed, I expect 6% growth in markets and I will allocate 249k, out of this 70k will be new savings and remaining will be reallocation from bonds to equities.
This is the base case, but if there is lower growth or if there is crash, I reallocate more from my bonds to eventually hit the 860k. If markets rip up by more than 6% I reallocate less from my bonds to equities to get to 860k

All figures in SGD '000

last year I returned 35%, a few percentage points above passive benchmarks, but nothing much to write home about. But definitely this year I'm considering switching to fully passive. Many years of doing active investing just to beat passive benchmark by a a few percentage points a year (and sometimes losing). Overall I've outperformed the indexes but only by mid double digits over the same time period. Just wondering if active is really worth it.

Those that had investments return lower than index should consider investing in index funds instead.. 2 years of bull market and still fail to beat index..

Hmm. Just for record I guess.

2021-2022
IBKR: 18.6%
CPFIS: 15.5%
SRS: 13.6%

Overall Net Worth increase by 26.5% (including inflows).

Looking ahead, returns probably won't be so high. (I use 5% pa for my estimates.)
Hopefully inflows can continue, so overall increase in net worth should still be quite decent.
Not yet at that stage where inflow is a small percentage of net worth, so still important to keep pumping it in...

For my Europe ETF, I chose whatever is in iShares "Core" series of ETFs because those are usually large AUM and low TER (0.1% in this case). So the core ETF for iShares was their Euro Stoxx 50 ETF which returned 15.5% in 2021.... But the wider index, Euro Stoxx 600, for which iShares doesn't have an ETF, returned 21%.... while I won't complain about 15.5%, this iillustrates the point that there are so many indices out there... you can always make your portfolio look better by choosing a worse performing benchmark (like STI?).

Anyway, I usually 'hedge' by buying both Vanguard and iShares ETF (one uses FTSE index, the other uses MSCI) so I can get the average return from both FTSE and MSCI. For Europe I didn't do the hedge because the Vanguard one is not accumulating and pays out EUR dividends and I didn't want the hassle of another currency....

My portfolio is up about 21% for the year, does not include the performance of my uninvested cash, owner occupied property, CPF and bonds.
