RIP
A 27-year-old man, who was engaged to his girlfriend of 10 years and scheduled to marry her in mid-November, passed away unexpectedly due to a cerebrovascular malformation. He donated both kidneys, his liver, and his iliac arteries, leaving behind a legacy of love.
From a young age, Chen Xunhui frequently suffered from headaches. It was only during his national service that he was diagnosed with arteriovenous malformation (AVM). He passed away on Tuesday (12th), his life ending at 27.
His mother, Chen Weilin (62, performing arts trainer), shared at the wake this morning that her son began complaining of headaches in Primary Five. The family assumed it was nothing serious and did not pay much attention. It was only after he enlisted in the army and sought medical help for severe headaches that the AVM diagnosis was confirmed.
The doctors said the only suitable treatment was Gamma Knife Surgery, but it would take three to eight years to see results, and there was also a risk of developing a tumour.
Unfortunately, fate was not kind to Chen. The surgery did not improve his condition; instead, a brain tumour developed, requiring ongoing observation.
Weilin said her son had planned to undergo surgery next month to remove the vascular tumour. However, at the end of last month, during pre-surgical preparations, doctors informed him that the situation had become urgent — without immediate surgery, he could fall into a coma.
That day, he suddenly felt numbness in his hand and went to the emergency department. He was admitted to the hospital, but he never came out.
After surgery, Chen fell into a coma and passed away two days ago. His family honoured his wish to donate his organs.
He was a loving person. He had told his fiancée before that if he were ever gone, he wanted his organs donated to help others.
Weilin shared that Chen had originally wanted to donate 10 organs, but his heart, lungs, and corneas were unsuitable. Ultimately, he donated both kidneys, his liver, and his iliac arteries.
From what I understand, these organs will help four patients in need.
She also revealed that last September, Chen proposed to his girlfriend in Taiwan, using a song he had composed himself. The couple had been deeply in love and were set to marry this November.
He planned everything carefully and never made us worry. Together with his fiancée, they saved over S$100,000 (about RM300,000) for the wedding, booked the hotel, and arranged the banquet.
Weilin treats her son’s fiancée as her own daughter and praised her for being strong.
Chen was known for his kindness and warmth, making many friends. Nearly 200 people attended his wake last night. He had also served in church, caring for children — what started as two or three kids grew to over 20, all of whom came to pay their respects to their big brother.
Weilin estimated that tonight’s visitors might reach 200–300. The wake was filled with cards from friends.
He touched so many lives. We all feel he was an angel.
Weilin recalled that she became pregnant with Chen during a difficult period in her life, when she was going through a divorce and had just lost her mother. Chen became her light and her reason to carry on.
He was such a funny person. He supported me more than I supported him. For 27 years, he was my sunshine.
Chen was a photographer, and also a singer, dancer, guitarist, and drummer — talented in many areas. He had even hosted a travel programme before, something his mother was proud of.
He grew up with Singaporean actor Lye Yuhan, who became his godbrother even before entering showbiz. Lye referred to Chen as Gorgor (big brother) because he came into Weilin’s life later.
On Facebook, Lye posted a tribute to his godbrother:
Gorgor, you are our angel. In your final moments, when you saved lives, everyone applauded you.
Chen did not want a sombre funeral. His wish was for everyone to wear bright, colourful clothing to send him off.
