Hey fellas. Asking on behalf of my friend who is deciding between the 2 options (290 or 290x). He's intending to keep his current monitor so will be gaming at 1080p at 60hz. Before anyone says it, he knows it's overkill but which option is more "value for money" given the $200ish difference between the 2?

Oh and which brand would you fellas recommend?

saw a powercolor 290 bf4 at laser for only 590 last week.
that is value for money.
can try unlocking also.

if only gtx780 are not senselessly overpriced here, i would take that and overclock the hell out of them

amd say is safe so is safe loh.
i think you can also lower the max temp at the expense of some noise.
local non-ref 290 are again priced senselessly.
290 is amd disruptor gpu, 399 for ref, +10-20 for non-ref.
but our distro really carrot head, msi and asus are sho notti!
the tri-x is still ok, that makes it the most value i guess so.

you could get a 2nd hand 780 for around 600, Nvidia cards have voltage restriction so you can't push it too hard :(

290. Not worth it to pay another $200++ for that little bit of extra performance difference for the 290X especially for 1080p display. Can consider MSI, Gigabyte and Sapphire.Yeah and make sure you get the non-reference versions.

How do the gigabyte cards fare against the sapphires?

Ok I understand. So brands aside, would you recommend a 290 over a 290x?

290 ba unless you like the x at the back. You should go youtube see those reviewers explain why choose 290 over 290x. 290 usually perform the same as 290x or just lose out by a few frames so the 200 price diff not worth it

Cool, thanks!

If for instance, he gets a new monitor and chooses to game at 1440, would the $200++ savings result in lesser gaming experience?

No point getting the 290x. The performance did not justify the amount of money being paid for. $200++ for the extra 5-9fps difference.

Next is get the non ref design. And fyi if you really thonk about msi or giga overcharging think again. Is just srp. Go down take a look. $688 with bf4. Non bf4 is almost $40-$50 cheaper. Like the giga at $630.

So does this mean it's unsafe and/or unwise to get the gigabyte 290?
not really ba... but they probably will release new bios to solve the issue. if you really worried about it get a msi one although 688 but if you sell away the bf4 can offset around $40
