3 years old ASUS dying.

Hi everyone,

My ASUS N61JQ has served me well for the paste 3.5 Years running at 16 hours daily. In recent months(10 months) it started to go very hot. I purchased a big cooler for this 16.9 inch laptop and removed the base cover so the cooler actually cools the component and etc directly(Cooler is useless with the cover on) As time goes by, even with cooler, it's starting to run at crazy temperature. Now it cant even run without the cooler, it will just crash because the temp hits 10x

Any suggestion? Change thermal paste / Fan ? I think the laptop itself is still doing good.

Change thermal paste and blow out dust, it will help to cool down

mine also having same problem.. same model, more than 3 years old.. will autoshut off when too hot even with cooler and base cover removed.. really sian.. where to apply the thermal paste?

Haha! It's a good laptop right! Running Strong. Hmm i'm still using it. 83degree with cooler. I just find that it's still good to go , but the heat problem is growing I'm not sure if thermal paste has "evaporated" these 3 years and if that is the problem. Which is why i'm seeking for professional advice here

So it's true that thermal paste will "fail" after like 3 years?

I think PC dreams n some shop in this forum can help to apply thermal paste. Just need to pay service charge. If not, can search on YouTube on how to DIY

ya need to change fan and thermal paste de..this lappy runs super hot de...90 plus all the time...

after changing the fans and thermal paste ($90)...now runs cooler at 80 degrees under heavy load le...idle around 58 degrees le

my asus k43sv also starting to feel the heat. using cpu intensive apps like photoshop and gaming.. can feel the heat coming out..

any idea how much it'll cost to clean the fan and reapply thermal paste?

I have the exact same issue with my ASUS N61JQ. Idle temp is around 80-85C. Under load it just shuts down.

I went to the power settings and set the laptop to maximize efficiency hoping that this will clock down the CPU and reduce the temps.

I've pretty much been using this laptop as a desktop so I'll probably just get a desktop to replace it.

all laptop have this problem lar, dust will accumulate and choke thus preventing the wind from the fan blowing through the small heat sink to cool it properly thus causing overheating. usually just clear the blocking dust solve the heat problem. how fast it choke depends on how dusty the place is and how long you on it.

the fastest way to accumulate dust is usually in the bedroom and esp using laptop on the bed.

desk top have this problem too just that the heatsink fin of desktop is usually much bigger gap thus it take much longer time for it to choke with dust.

but i have also seen before some cpu heatsink fin gap is so wide that it quite impossible for dust to accumulate until it block the wind flow.

if you thinking of replacing your laptop just because of dust blocking heat, it's really a waste when you can just spend $50 asking a laptop repair shop to clear it for you.(If you cannot do it yourself) or you can donate it to me so that i can give my son for his sch.

i recall back in early 2010 a friend had the same model.
n61jq. the idle temp is 66deg C. not surprising that 3 yrs later (ie now), the idel temp has creeped up

maybe haswell laptops will have cooler idle temps. can consider them after ur asus totally burns out

Quite slow machine and will take quite long to start up. Honestly when a new OS come out, I will wait for the first big update to be out then I will change notebook. I sold my Windows 7 notebook and temporary using my little kid netbook while waiting. Windows 8.1 coming out soon and soon will be built in all notebooks so good time to buy a new one. I5 is good enough if clock at the speed > 2.4Ghz like 2.6Ghz. RAM must be at least 8Gb, it will be better if 16Gb at speed 1600Mhz. New OS has better security and faster processing speed with better hardware.
