If you are going with a $300 budget, even if you go for "branded" but cheap tablet, it is likely they are also employing the same internal hardware as those MIC tablets.

See this old thread for reference: http://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/tablet-den-328/please-suggest-android-10-inch-4290936.html

For 1st-gen branded 10.1", the closest to yr budget may be the Asus Memopad Smart 10 which I hv seen selling for $399.

Asus also just announced a new budget 10.1" tablet at IFA so u may want to wait for the pricing details:-

ASUS shows off MeMO Pad 8 and 10, budget tablets arriving before year's end (hands-on)

For $300 brand new branded tablet, if you don't mind a 9.7", then you should look at this HP touchpad (Qualcomm Snapdragon 1.5GHz Dual Core Processor) with 1GB Ram, 64GB internal memory:

Best price for Clearance HP touchpad 64GB tablet | eBay

Best thing is that it is well supported by the xda developer community, so custom roms are aplenty.

I prefer to buy in local shop at least still have warranty. Don't even know if buy from ebay is in good condition or not.

You can also consider AC Ryan 9.7" tab. Saw it a couple of months back selling in Challenger for $299, but not sure about the price and stock availability now. You can check with AC-Ryan in this forum.

You can also look at tablets from Shinco although i think they tend to be 9.7" rather than 10.1".
IMO the quality of Shinco n ACRyan tablets is not much different from MIC tablets but the advantage is that you get local warranty so theres no need to ship overseas for repairs.

If you dont mind refurbished sets, theres a PC Dreams outlet in Sm Lim Sq that sells refurbished units and they had an Acer A500 going for below $300 a few days ago. They may prob give u a couple of months shop warranty.

Comex only have 7.9 inch instead of 9.7 inch.

The 7.9" is their latest model. Its actually their best looking model with a decent screen. Quite likely that its an oem of the Chuwi v88. The 9.7" model is pretty old and outdated.
