A financial advisor who is in his 20s and has been in the field for around 3 years boasts about a 32.7% returns in 2017.

He claims ILP is superior to ETFs. Hence everyone should invest with him (through his ILPs).

How does one debunk his myth?

Why do you need to?

Perhaps he did have total returns of 32.7% in 2017. A monkey could have managed the same thing using a basket of U.S. tech stocks, for example. Total returns of about 20% (in U.S. dollar terms anyway) were easily achievable that year using a bog standard S&P 500 stock index fund. It was a bullish year.

So what?

for this case the fair comparison will be the returns from forex/shares trading. the purpose of etf is to provide investors with decent average returns over a long period not high returns in a random single period

It's rather amusing somebody is bragging about 2017's performance in 2019. (What about 2018? :D)

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. He's in his 20s, been through only the high, and bragged about his capabilities as a financial advisor based on a single year.

Seriously?! Waving around his 2017 record when the market went on a bull run the entire year? :s13:

Ask him how he performed in 2018 :o

I have 20 friends. Each of them is holding a dice. All of them roll the dice. 3 of them roll 6. I tell the rest to take their dice and FO and hide somewhere. Then I invite people to come in and show them the 6 that these 3 friends rolled. "See, with my guidance these people can roll 6! If you want to know how to roll 6 also, pay me some money and I will teach you how!"

This is exactly how insurance company sell their plan too. Always has a nice chart to show.

all investments will lose out to the returns of the expert MM/SSI investors. any investment that has higher return than expert MM/SSI investors will be labelled a scam. :s13:

Even if you can beat ILP returns, there are some investors that cannot beat ILP returns. So even if ILP is bad, there are investors whose returns are even worse.... maybe they will be better off with ILP.

Disclaimer: Vested in insurance companies :s13:

Maybe he can have those returns but he will earn from hefty fees. You might as well manage yourself and earn more.

Tell the FA that he cannot beat this guru. :s13:

https://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/119150404-post680.html

Wow! The way you talk:
"His probably semi rich but is an old school investor with no experience in stock market and think property investing > stocks."
is like your are a expert stock investor?

Since you claimed that I have no experience in stock market (which obviously is totally baseless), so I am showing you my stock trade, you can see that I owned VALE and USG in Jan 2018 which I mentioned before here:
https://forums.hardwarezone.com.sg/112542897-post408.html
https://i.imgur.com/i1dsIaW.jpg

My USG has been taken over at US$44.00 in cash per share (announced in Jun 2018).

I sold my VALE at US$14.1925 per share.
You can see my transaction slip here:
https://i.imgur.com/achomQ6.jpg

(The price of VALE is now US$11.22 per share).

Stocks -- Ave Purchased Price -- Price sold -- Holding Period(Years) -- CAGR p.a.(%) -- Total Capital Gain(%)
USG -- US$14.11 -- US$44.00 -- ~6 yrs -- 20.87% -- 211.21%
VALE -- US$4.09 -- US$14.1925 -- ~3 yrs -- 51.39% -- 246.31%

So, my CAGR p.a. return for the above 2 stocks (excluding dividends) are 20.87% and 51.39% respectively.
In terms of total capital gains, the above 2 stocks give 211.21% and 246.31% respectively (excluding dividends).

Obviously including dividends the actual real returns will be higher (but I had ignored them for simplicity of calculations)!

So, I have evidence to proof my high stock investment returns, and that I indeed sold near the peak price!

Since you claimed that I have no experience in stock market, could you please show your performance in stock investment to justify your claim that you are indeed a superb stock investor with high absolute returns from stocks (much better than me who has "no experience in stock market" (in your own words) but can achieve CAGR of 20.87% and 51.39% returns (excluding dividends) from stocks)? :s8:
