Hi, just cracked the screen of my iPhone and went to Singtel to ask for a repair.
They mentioned it was $350... Why so expensive??
It baffles me that I paid a couple of hundreds for my iPhone already, and on top of that, another couple more hundred for the screen. If it is within the hundred range, I can still accept. But $300 over is not a small sum...

Read on the papers recently that now phones can be insured. I think I need that service, I think $350 could easily cover everything. Pffft. Mobilecover anyone?

Singtel and other telcos do not repair iPhones - they sell you a refurbished set as replacement and send back ur original set back to Foxconn for refurbishment. The $350 is the cost of the refurb set.

You can approach 3rd party repair shops if you want your set repaired. Replacement cost for iPhone 5 screen will be higher because the digitizer and lcd panel is fused together

Repair IPhone screen at 3rd party shops only costs about $90 for OEM screen and $110 for original apple screen. This is for IPhone 4. If IPhone 5 will Definitely be more expensive.

There is no such thing as "original apple screen" though :s22:

It'll all depends of on how you view the value of the $350.

Each refurbish set comes with new screen, housing/casing and a new battery, which are all original Apple parts.

I'm not sure about Singtel but I understand that M1 gives 90 days of limited warranty to such refurbish phone.

Like what negativzero had mentioned, there aren't "NEW" original parts available in the repair market as Apple has very strict control over this.

You might be lucky to be able to get a 2nd hand original working parts that was strip from a spoil phone but chances are slim.

OEM parts are a hit or miss thingy cos I repair iphones myself and had order from different sources. It also very much depends on the "skill" of the technician performing the repairs.

Just to add, screen replacement for S3 by Samsung Service Centre is about $200 plus already wor.

End of day, it's still yours to decide...;););)

Is there anything else faulty with your iphone? eg home button not sensitive or battery drain out quickly?
You can go to Apple authorized service centre QCD Tech at Tai Seng, try.
Last time, my son's iPhone screen cracked, I went there. Told counter staff the reasons above, she checked n agreed home button not quite sensitive but also said got to pay $350 since cracked screen, as they don't repair but will replace w refurbished ones. I reasoned w them, iPhone still under second yr warranty, can live w e cracked screen but like the other problem fixed. E staff gave me apple hotline and said to call, if e staff could waive the $350, she would be able to proceed w the replacement. Thank God I called and apple staff agreed to put up approval for waiver. May not be the case all the time, but you can give a try.

There are some shops that do the repair in front of you. This mitigates some of the risks of missing screws, exchanged parts... The battery change for my 3GS was done in front of me and everything was explained clearly.. so no complaints.

So you're saying third party replacement parts are actually replicas built to specifications?

I read that Apple sources iPhone parts from many suppliers - isnt it likely that some of the suppliers would quietly sell excess quantity to other people?

Basically there are no apple branded parts.

There are claims that parts used come from factories supplying to apple but i don't know how the claims can be validated.

QCD now telco sets have to go back to respective telcos. They only entertain sets bought from apple store.
