What PSU are you using? If its a good one like Seasonic, Superflower etc... ITs not an issue.

May not be necessary. TS didn't mention what 550W he is using. If its a good PSU, there is no issue. Even if power consumption exceeds rating, protection will kick in and PSU will trip resulting in no damage.

However, this is true only for good PSU. If crappy ones, better don't try.

Ahh okay I see where you are coming from.

TS to provide the brand, model and age of your PSU. Older PSU may suffer from part degradation.

Hi all

Going to buy a 390x card. Can my psu 550w handle it?

Moz

The R9 390/390X series is just a rebranded version of the R9 290/290X series albeit with higher gpu clock speed and 4gb more ram. Looking at the some of the reviews by some sites i'm sure u can conclude that the Sapphire Tri-X R9 390X @ $699 (buy at lazada with Mastercard, using coupon code mcunlocked can get $50 discount) is a poor buy compared to the Leadtek Gtx 970 Hurricane @ $499 (buy at lazada with Mastercard, using coupon code mcunlocked can get $50 discount).

Especially when the R9 390X cost around $200 more than gtx 970, it simply doesn't make sense to spend so much more on a card which only outperform slightly more than the other. Furthermore i'm sure u won't have to change your psu if u bought the gtx 970 as it's power consumption is quite low.

It solely depends on the context and monitor he is using. If he does rendering and games on a 1440p then the 390x is undisputable in terms of performance. You will be very surprise how hard a 970 would choke at 3.5 above vram.

970 is at best a great performer at 1080p range. You get what you paid though.

I am actually kinda blur with 1440p gaming. Need special monitor to play 1440p? My current monitor is 27inch samsung.can play 1440p?

1440p refers to the resolution.

2560 x 1440 is 1440p
1920 x 1080 is 1080p

Get it?

recommendation power on the box of sapphire R9 390x card is 750W.
If it is Seasonic/FSP/Super Flower/Corsair (Non-CX)/Cooler Master (Non-Extreme)/Silverstone, you'll see this:

If it is Headway/VIOS/iCute/CM Extreme, you'll see this:
