3GS, can update iOS to which version?

Just inherited a 3GS but can't install whatsapp cos need iOS 4.3. I'm still on 4.0.

How to update to 4.3? Or update all the way to the latest?

I'm using 6.12 jailbroken. Lag? A little bit but still ok consider the fact I installed some tweaks and stuffs
