My 1 tb wd green might be dying of old age soon..
Any suggestions which should I get as replacement?
Quiet and long lasting, dont need to be super fast as mostly for storage.

I would skip the 3TBs and go for either 2TB or 4TB WD Black or Green. Blacks are better but Greens will do if the data is not accessed frequently.

What is considered accessed frequently?

Sent from INO SCOUT 2 using GAGT

It's a bit subjective. The Green has slower wake and seek times. I have both Blacks and Greens and can feel the Greens are noticeably slower when loading programs or large amounts of random data. It would not be that big an issue if the drive is accessed infrequently but the slower speed will become noticeable if you use the Green a lot.

If you are referring to the parking issue, I personally like the green feature but said feature can always be disabled if the nature of your access will trigger too much parking.

Exactly what Greens are about.

For plain storage of files like video/songs etc it doesn't justify a Black (price diff is quite significant).

Get Hitachi boxed retail drive if you can still find it, cheaper than WD blacks/reds for the same performance and reliability.

Toshiba drives only come with 2 years warranty, hitachi boxed drives comes with 3.

Never get the Green for storage, you get tons of headache.
Never get the Blue, it is as unreliable as the Green

If you are not going for performance, then Black is not for you. It is significantly noisier than WD Green and Blue.

For Storage, get the RED

I have a wd green and notice everytime i dont use it for 5 minutes it will spin down and it takes a while to reload when I access it again. Is it a firmware issue? Thinking of getting another brand because of this.

VideoPro website still lists the 3TB(presumably 7k3000) for $169, so it might still be available locally, might wanna check with the local distro about the availability. I stocked up an extra 3TB last year before it started disappearing luckily :D
No Seagate ? not recommended ?

The higher end models seem to be relatively okay, mostly the "Green" drives and lower end models with the crazy high death rates.

It is a feature of Green. If your system doesn't access it, it will just spin down and save power and reduce wear also.

If you hate that 3s ish of wait for it to load again then go get Red.

This is due to the power management options in Windows and nothing to do with the green feature of WD Green. You can disable HDD sleep through the Control Panel.
