4 year worth of data

Hi there

I have like 4 years worth of data on my harddrive. One day, I tried to encrypt with bitlocker. For some reason, it was interrupted at 0 percent. And then BitLocker Drive Encryption failed to recover from an abruptly terminated conversion.

Now, drive is inaccessible.

When I used manage-bde
It shows 0% encrypted
It shows unencrypted.
Disk size unknown.
Aes-128 diffuser.

What are the chance of recovering the data.

It's complicated.
My drive is 1tb.
So I am expected to get 1tb worth.
It's encrypted using windows 7 machine.
Some more the chance of success not so high.

You shouldn't use BDE unless you have a bloody good reason to.


Always CHKDSK before doing BDE.


Anyway, assuming that the encryption never began, you can send it to a data recovery shop. $500 thereabouts since the physical media ISN'T damaged.

I went to a boutique one. Charge about 1k plus. 900gb data. Waiting for their preliminary report. Unless anybody here can convince me, then I will take back my he

No point cos damage was not caused by accidental deletion (of which Recurva can help with) but rather an encryption process (which technically is reading, rehashing and then saving the hashed data over the unhashed data) that gone horribly wrong


This data damage is one of the most serious I heard in my 10+ years of playing around with hardware


Let the pros deal with this one bo bian


Alternatively, OP, see if you can set up a reddit account and post at Datahoarder subreddit cos they may have the expertise to advise such cases

it would appear that the Bitlocker tried to start the process. It would only have encrypted the MFT (i.e. Windows Explorer cannot find the files cos the map is... well... destroyed), but if it has not started processing the data on the drive, the original data should still be intact.


Actually... TS should have considered using Testdisk if he was a little more savvy. It might have recovered some files in that case. And free of charge too.



It's really like saying that you had a map to the forest containing treasure. The map may have been destroyed with water from the storm, but it doesn't change the fact that the treasure chest is still there. You would just take a much longer time to find it

Unless you are suggesting that was acid rain and it burnt the treasure chest too... well, good luck.

I have read on the internet. The success rate is quite low. So far I haven't seen any article. And there are mixed opinoon. Like only encrypted data can be decrypt, only unencrypted data can be decrypted. Some files will be loss.

That was my concern; now question is why the encryption/decryption fail leading to loss of access to files
