4k gaming rig recommendation

Hi people,

I am looking for build a 4k rig for gaming mainly. I also do photoshop and 4k netflix. I don't intend to overclock and I am looking at reliability.

Below are the stuff I will reuse

1) Dell up3216q 4k monitor
2) creative x7 plus speakers
3) 4tb NAS

I am thinking of getting an intel processor maybe i5 7500. My past two motherboards are an Asus sabertooth and I had great experience with it.

I am thinking of getting a gtx1080ti. Plus a blueray player for playback.

My initial idea

1) Asus Z270 mark 2 + i5 7500 $560
2) 16 gb ram $200
3) gtx 1080 ti which brand? $1200
4) bluray drive $100
5) samsung 960 evo 500gb $380
6) PSU case? $300?

Total 2740

BTW, are all the 1080ti FE the same across all brands? Zotac is having a free game promotion but I am not sure about the brand zotac...

Total budget is Kind of expensive. Anything I can give up to make it slightly cheaper?

yes for GTX 1080ti FE is the same across all brands. get zotac, u have 5 years of warranty as well.

but to lesser your budget will be getting a GTX 1080 (which is still capable for 4k gaming.)
ram get those value ram.
PSU and case 300, unless u dun mind any case so long it fits into your budget u can consider Techware or xigatek or cm as well. PSU if can get superflower ledex gold 650W.

Why would you spend more on a motherboard when you can save a lot more?

Especially you are aiming for a 4k gaming rig, you should prioritize more on CPU and GPU. Rather than spending a lot more on motherboard that offers you nothing much.

Remember 4k every FPS counts. Spending on motherboard is not gonna increase your FPS.

If i were to spend between $5xx to $6xx range for a motherboard and cpu combo, i would prioritize more towards a better CPU and cheaper motherboard. To get every performance out from it.

And that is where i think the R7 1700 steps in with a B350 motherboard. Another option is to get a cheaper B250 motherboard with a i7 7700.

Get a regular SSD 2.5" rather than going all super fast in Samsung 960 evo. Not unless you need extreme fast storage. A regular SSD will do the job for less.

Casing is very personal. So i leave that option open for you to choose.

Not yet. He meant 4k gaming bro. Hope Netflix allow hardware acceleration to use gpu and run 4k in near future though. For ts I think it's better to choose kabylake for out-of-the-box capability to run 4k Netflix.


Anyway ts, do some auto or light overclocking with the motherboard choice you chosen. Don't waste the hardware capability. Since you opt for the asus TUF Z series for longer warranty, light overclocking will not take toll your system. Hence I suggested a 3000 mhz ram and i5-7600k with a decently cheap cooler.

There is already that much you can do. Cause you are already going to buy a top tier card. And furthermore you not going to pay for another gtx1080ti for sli option.

So max out the cpu option. In demanding titles and cpu bound games. You will see the i7 shine a little more than a regular 4 cores i5. And when you hit 4k resolutions, you may gain a few more fps.

Of cause if you still want to save some money, i5 is still fine. Buy whatever you think you are comfortable at. But i dont see why you need to spend so much on the cpu and mobo combo. Cause the price clearly you can get something better.

Yeap. But mentioning more on 4k gaming. Cause i felt tht TS can do a lot more than just overspend on cpu and board combo.

And i feel that even if he needs 4k netflix, he can go for a cheaper board with an i7 7700k.

At the end of the day, is 4k netflix that "important" or a want?

does not matter, but it does not mean u splurge on something that gives u 0 fps improvement. Spent it on areas where it matter...CPU,GPU...
spent on mobo when u have sort of maxed out the performance of where u can go

Ahh, my bad..

Think i7 7700k with z270 board if only for gaming and 4k Netflix now.

Think Ryzen 1700 will be better if you're considering to live stream / recording game.

Newer games are starting to utilize more than just 4 cores also...

Hmmm if already spending so much for a z270 and a gtx 1080ti, why not spend a little more to get a k CPU?

I dug around and there isn't much difference in performance for 7600k vs 7700k for 4k gaming

Title dependent. More new titles using hyperthreading albeit still not mature. Up to you whether you want the hyperthreading from i7 or not.
