If you have money to spare, you can consider. But its quite pointless now. Almost all television and movies all still film at most 1080p. So you'll be just watching something that's digitally upscale to 4k resolution. I think you can still help a little bit more, the price will surely drop.
Totally agree :)

I personally feel and have noticed that most people (men) upgrade their tv around the World Cup Period. HDTVs became main stream around 2010 imo..

FIFA 2014 partners are already working on getting the matches broadcasted over 4K. So there will be grater push towards 4K ?

Back then in 2010, there wasn't much HD content but people upgraded just for the World Cup.

and to add on, more 4K Content is coming our way.

Netflix plans to release 4K content with House of Cards Season 2 due just 2 months away.

i think sony 4k tv is a better choice, as sony themselves have their movie production line.

That does not means they will produce all their movies in 4K technology from now.

Sure, they can re-master HD to 4K. But is still not 4K source. Finally it all down to price point. From producer, manufacturing and finally consumer. Quantity and manufacturing (and advancement in manufacturing technology) will determine the final price.

So is either you jump in at high price (and may be show off to friend and family) against at a more reasonable price with lots of sources already ready for you to enjoy.

Eventually, we may be changing our TV just like changing hand phone. For most people, if you pay much more as your initial cost, you may not do the same as often as your are write off a costly equipment.

There is a major different for full HD back in 2010 as full HD is available is almost all size of TV, and a big turning point for LCD into LED/LCD in term of price.

Currently 4K is only available in large panel size. I guess it will take a while.

i think is other than blu ray available in 4k, probably can't get other content in 4k, unless mio and starhub support 4k too. Even when mio and starhub support full hd content, a lot of their channels are also still no full hd. I think 4k become mainstream will be still quite sometime away.

Re

Problem with OLED is price. When it was launch 2 months back. It was priced at $14,999. Just last week, it was $9,999 with additional $1000 shopping voc. So effective price is now $8,999. The price different in 2 months is almost enough to buy 4K TV !

I thought the curved 55" OLED tv advertised price is about $12 000?

Base on my understanding from recent LG/HWZ presentation. Currently only USB3 has enough transfer rate to support 4K. Blue ray will not. Only up-scaling to 4K from Blue ray.

Another possibility is they have to remove some feature eg multi language from blue ray so that 4K content can fit into the disc. This is yet to know.

Re

You are referring to up-scaling to 4K or real 4K movie?

There's no true 4K movie now for there's no true 4k tv. All discussions are pertaining to UHD (or synonymously called 4K) movies and tvs

What I meant was when I use a USB 2.0 flashdrive containing a 4K movie and plug it into the USB 2.0 port of my SAMSUNG 4K TV's One-Connect Bar the movie can be played.

I'm not sure how other brands of 4K tv work. SAMSUNG split its screen into 4 quadrants. To play a 4K movie on SAMSUNG's 4K tv you'll need 4x1080p files. A single file of 4K movie cannot be played on its 4K tv.

The 2nd paragraph above implies the 4K movie is in 4 files of 1080p each

Apparently Samsung and Sony can't play the 4K clip from its USB ports. LG can. I saw it when the salesman demo for me to see. I think he was trying to prove why it wasn't advisable to buy from Samsung or Sony now.

Hopefully that issue can be rectified by firmware upgrades.

I've explained how a 4k movie is played on SAMSUNG 4k tv leow. You see those 4k demo documentaries played on SAMSUNG 4K tvs at HN, COURTS, BDK etc. Ask the salesman there to show to you lah

I think it depends on what you view. If you watch mostly free to air or Starhub channels, why bother? As of today, only Ch 5 has HD. Even for Starhub, many channels are not HD. Let alone UHD. So what's the point?

But if you watch mostly Blu-ray then I guess its a good investment. Sure, most Blu-rays are HD and not UHD but I'm sure one day UHD ones will become common.

by that time, 4k TV will be much cheaper.

SD or HD channels (1080i from Starhub's HD set-top box for example) will not become clearer with 4K resolution, in fact SD channels could be even dimmer and worse because pictures are resized too much. With that said, my opinion, if you have that budget, OLED could be more practical because of excellent response time, color gamut and black level.

The next consideration is should 4K be current 16:9 or future 21:9 format? It make sense to be 21:9 due to its much higher resolution.

Yes, the salesman himself also hinted that Samsung 4K tv display upscaled content from USB. He also showed me how the same TV from Samsung and Sony could not play 4K content from USB port but the LG could. :)

Is not surprised as Sony and Samsung are basically same hardware. I believe eventually it will get fixed via firmware, but surprised it was not told to customer out front.

This is against Lemon law.
