Likely to see M1 collab with SH to share 5G infrastructure, also dragging in MR...?

In other news - what bands of 5G will SG be using?

Hmm.

edit: telcos here already so picky about providing VOLTE so I don't expect much except profiteering-type pattern...

i'm just hoping it won't be a repeat of what happened when the telcos rolled out 4G service. back then they gave 12 GB data monthly even at the lowest tier postpaid plan. then they shrunk the plans down to 2 GB data, with the excuse that they are now providing 4G service.

telcos these days providing more mobile data, let's hope it stays that way even when they start rolling out 5G coverage.

Don’t worry. For 5G, telco will be giving more data.

As it stands Singapore is planning to have 2 standalone 5G services that use both the sub 6 band (3.5GHz) and mmWave (26GHz). Those 2 networks will be standalone meaning they won't use existing network infrastructure. There will also be 2 more 5G networks using just mmWave.

Just like WiFi, a higher frequency radio waves provide much better speed at the cost of range while the opposite is true lower frequency radio waves.

A real life example is verizon in the US. Where 5G on mmWave tend to drop signal indoors or when encountering obstacles etc.

One main advantage for standalone 5G is ultra low latency which enables uses like driver-less cars, Remote control surgery, drones etc. While non standalone 5G could be deployed faster by utilizing existing LTE network.

Imo standalone 5G is where the main benefit of 5G lies. non-standalone 5G only provides additional speed which only benefits mobile phone users.

Another thing to note is not all 5G phones support the standalone 5G standard or mmWaves. Afaik only Huawei 5G phones support standalone 5G while not supporting mmWaves. While qualcomm current x50 modem in their snapdragon 855 does not support a standalone 5G network. This shouldn't be an issue unless you have already bought a 5G phone in anticipation for the upcoming 5G networks

hmm given all the different 5G forms (SA, NSA) and bands...might really be wiser to stand back and wait for things to settle down before going for it. otherwise you might end up buying an expensive 5G-capable phone that won't be fully compatible with everything 5G in 1 or 2 years.

Well my guess if the current situation stands, band n78(3.5GHz) and band n257 or n261 (28GHz) and n258 (26GHz)

you probably be fine with a mid band(3.5GHz) only phone

Don't buy a non standalone (NSA) only 5G phone i.e any phone with the x50 modem from Qualcomm.

No need to buy 5G phone now. And when 5G is ready in Singapore, there will be cheap sub S$400 5G phone available, or even sub S$300 5G phones.

Redmi K30 5G is at RMB1999 now with SD765G, supporting SA/NSA, band n41/n78.

Not supporting n79 may cause K30 5G some problems in China as the new telco NRTA (中国广电) will likely use band n79.

Realme X50 5G may be similarly priced.

SD765G based Realme X50 5G is a real 5G phone supporting SA/NSA, band n1/n41/n78/n79.
