I've been trying to work out the specs for a new gaming desktop.

I'm not sure if I've missed out anything but...

If by all means you really wanna go till lga2011 (which we dont see why you need till that extent) and you willing to burn your pocket for this kind of rig, then let us know again and we will see what we can do.

FYI

A gaming rig only needs an i5 to run, max an i7 if you need to run multiple games at any one point of time. Not necessary to go till a i7 extreme.

Next is the 32gb of rams. Intel does not have much performance boost from 1333mhz onwards. And gaming does not utilize more than 8gb of rams.

Next is the choice of GPU. This yes i agree we need to cater more for this area as gaming performance comes from GPU instead of CPU.

The rest i leave it to the rest to comment.

Only proceed to spend that kind of money if you really need it.

Remember the sky is the limit when comes to DIY pc. And you must always know, spending more does not mean future proofing.

A com of this lvl will be obsolete by next yr when gpu is designed better for 4K res and 4K res monitors will b cheaper by then.

You pay extra now is mainly for bragging rights nia.

when you got such a beast rig, you don't wanna go holiday liao. use the spare cash to pay for electricity bills

Those CPUs and mobos will be outdated within the coming few weeks, LGA 2011-3 is just around the corner.

Gtx 880 not coming anytime soon due to some issues with 20nm node and have to retool for 28nm (again) supposedly.

They said it wont be launched till 15 Jan earliest

And 880 is only gm104 meaning small maxwell which is nvidia milking ppl again so they can release 980 with big maxwell like what they did with 680,780

ohhh didnt know about that. but the specs look good too! heard the power consumption is alot lesser.

It's like when I got my tri-mon rig in 2011... it was the "in" thing at that time but GPU power has only caught up in 2013.

I would go for 1440 or even the more exotic 2560x1080 in the meantime while waiting for gpu power to catch up with 4k screens...

4k screens are pricy now and GPUS that can max setting it at 60fps are not yet born.

Btw, sli is only good for the few games that have profiles for it.... heck titan fall launched without sli support and only recently did Rome ii release sli support.

Without sli support you will inspector to fiddle with settings and it will either not work or will have graphical artifacts.

I still remember when bf4 launch sli crossfire support got problem. Bloody maps all got terrain artefact.
