Lolz.
Just watched the first few minutes and i disagree with almost ebrything george yeo said.

First just bcoz china value homogeneity doesn't mean it doesn't want hegemony.
Homogeneity and hegemony are not mutually exclusive or incompatible.
In fact they are perfectly compatible.

Hegemony gives stronger party power to set up societal class stratification to ensure the subjugated party can never rise to challenge the homogeneity of the stronger upper class. And in countries where govt hold almost absolute power they can more easily establish and get away with this.

Japan ish valued homogeneity also. That didn't stop them from trying to hegemony the entire SE Asia during ww2.

Second the crap talk about 'internal circulation' vs 'external circulation' i donch buy it.
Coz china was heavily engaged in global trade. Its economy was driven by outward facing.

The recent emphasis on internal circulation ish coz the world exited from the cheap money era after the 2008 financial crisis. Add that to china's own ownself created economic woes.

Sho methinks the govt ish pushing for transition to internal consumption model as a means to dig ownself out of economic woes. To make use of the vast population to spend their way out of economic woes.

And not coz they want to build walls to close in their society.

What he said is inaccurate if compared to major developed nations e.g., Western Europe, Japan, US, where absolute income and formal safety nets for the poorest are higher. African countries, brazil or India maybe some truth. 600 million people in China still live on a monthly income of around 1,000 RMB. The poorest 10% in developed nations, even accounting for higher living costs, generally possess far higher purchasing power, food security, and social safety payouts. China’s hukou system also restricts rural born citizens from accessing the same quality of healthcare, public pensions, and education in major cities as urban residents. GY is either a clown or intentionally deceptive. :s13:

I wonder what George Yeo thinks of the bottom 10% in Singapore? All that shilling for China and he barely comments on matters Singaporean.

I am willing to give China credit where it is due and it did lift millions out of poverty but as previous posters comment, it did not remove structural barriers like the hukou system that keep hundreds of millions at an increasing disadvantage in their own country. Social inequality has increased in China since 1995. And social inequality may be understandable in Brazil or India, but in a still politically communist country, it is unforgivable. You can argue that China is many things good but it is damn foolish to argue that it is a democratic country.

He says that modern chinese children can directly read the analects of Confucius but China has simplified characters right? I was told that taiwanese and HK people who still use the older characters are more able to read the ancient texts than the PRCs. If you lie about simple things like this to build the myth of homogeneity (China isn't) and continuity with the past (when the commies actively destroyed the past!), you harm your own credibility.

Hegemony means one group holds power, and it often creates homogeneity by making everyone follow the same rules, culture, or ideas.

Why do you call him a traitor?

This.
All that shilling for China and he barely comments on matters Singaporean.

It's almost as if he's an actual agent of foreign influence.

The main problem is his prior affliation to the incumbent government and ruling party (and Singapore by extension). It lends a certain sense of credibility and gravitas to his words and perspective to outside observers, even though he may just be shilling. Also the flipside, it could affect how others view Singapore's true interests and perspective. A fifth column of sorts.

True, traditional Chinese characters has another level of complexity that otherwise using simplifed Chinese character can change the entire meaning.

One example which was a translation joke is 干爆鸭 which lol got translated to fu-ck the duck till it exploded.

Because the traditional character is 乾 (dry) become 干,at the same time another character 幹 (to do) also become 干

Thus 乾爆鸭 has one meaning but 干爆鸭 can have two meaning which gave birth to fu-ck the duck till it exploded. Lmao

Yet now Chinese so aggressive at Singapore say we let our Chinese standard down, cannot speak chinese now and we 崇洋媚外 suck up to America etc want to speak English , but they being an actual native Chinese speaking society is the one who actually let down the ancestor Chinese standard.

So sorry say what 5000 years Chinese culture? After cultural revolution to deny the wisdom of the 5000 years, the current Chinese is only 50 years or even less of culture.
