780Ti or 290x

Hi bros,

I'm looking to upgrade from my current MSI R6970 Lightning 2048MB GDDR5 Twin Frozr III which is around 2~3 years old already, have served me well thus far but just want a back up in case it fails.

I've researched and decided upon those 2 but I'm not sure which one you guys will recommend?

Oh and also, my pc casing is the cm storm enforcer, it has this huge ass vent on top and I'm actually looking to fix a fan on it to cover it up, otherwise it's just sitting open there and letting in dust. Which fan would you guys recommend as well?

Hmmm depending on your needs and what types of games you are playing. Actually I would get either 780 or 290, cause imo the premium paid for the ti and x does not justify their performance gain. The rest is up to you whether you like Amd or nvidia ba... More of a fan boy questions lol. But on the Amd side, do take note that 290 give off quite Alot of heat at load compared to 780.

As for fans, can consider corsair af series, they are not bad...

If you are comfortable using you current amd card and dont mind another amd card can consider r9 290 instead.

Since you can afford, just get 780ti. Plug & play. No need to care about the heat from a 290X

Is not overheating issues, it is designed to run at 94deg operating temps. Its not overheating, if it does overheat means it will complete shut off the display with just your cpu running.

Things to take note when buying the 290 290x.

It is based on a new hawaii pro hawaii xt chip. It was rated 94deg operating temps on a Ref card cooler. Once manufacturers such as asus, msi, gigabyte, etc took it and strap on a non ref cooler, it no longer operates at 94deg. Not unless one overclocks the card and pushing its limit.

On non ref card, its usual temp is at 84deg +/- 2deg. Still a bit hotter over the nvidias counterpart that runs at around 76deg.

Thats aside. Drivers issues. This is a hit or miss for some people. Not everyone will face this issues, some will some wont. In my case none of the drivers issue showed up yet.

Recommendable Amd cards manufacturer you can look for is, Sapphire, Gigabyte, Msi and Asus. Go for sapphire if you want a much cooler card. With their Vapour X chamber it managed to go slightly below 80deg. But take note on their warranty as it is only 2 years.
