9700K Temps

My 9700K (stock) runs up to 73 Deg C when playing Witcher 3 on max.

Cooled by an NZXT Kraken X62.

Is that too high? Any point in changing the thermal compound?

My old 2500K never hit >70 Deg even when aircooled so this is surprising.

I'm on around low 60 degrees while gaming on a Corsair H150i Pro with upgraded ML-120 Pro fans + Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut Thermal Paste. Overclocked to 5.0Ghz stable across all 8 cores at 1.32V. On Intel burn test for an hour, that hits no more than 80 degrees hammering all cores at 100% with AVX instruction set.

Your temps seems fine. You definitely need a good cooler for the 9th generation CPUs. Your temps are fine just that overclocking you definitely need a more potent cooler.

P.S - Mine is in an aircon room. 9900k runs about 8 degrees hotter on average from what I've seen.

Yea I was going to ask. What's your ambient temperature?

I think I will drop by to get a tube of Kryonaut. I'm only using a 280mm radiator so perhaps that makes a difference?

Anyway my NF-A14 PPC 2000 just came in the mail. Time to give them a go.

My ambient temperature with aircon never measure but basically it's an air-conditioned room.

You can try this first in the BIOS. Disable MCE in the BIOS instead of leaving it on AUTO. Gigabyte boards tend to overcompensate voltage by spiking the CPU so disable that and give it a go and see temps drop. It should drop.

My guideline for CPUs should be around 60-70 for gaming and low 80s for stress testing with AVX instructions. I won't clock higher than that even if I have headroom. I want to leave a margin before TjMAX.

Can't recall but disable MCE in BIOS and try gaming again. See your temps should drop.

I’m also interested in Z390 + i7-9700K build. When you guys OC, does the PC stay in the OC speed or it will throttle down when surfing internet & YouTube? I don’t want to PC to stay hot all the time.

MCE is an Asus term called Multi Core Enhancement.

So if gigabyte call it Enhanced Multi Core Performance, then that should be it.

Stay on the OC frequency, unless you play with P-state. But it's a bit difficult to learn which value to key in.

My 1700 is 3.9ghz stable all core all time, but temp remain low 30s until there's load. Gaming about 50-60 deg C only. Max temp at high 60s peaking at 70s.

I also truly advocate staying on the OC frequency all the time. It does not mean it will run hot all the time. I run it this way for full stability and playing with P-states is a lengthy process and I have seen some games stutter due to the variant clocking up and down. Almost all overclocking guides disables all p-states and other power saving features when testing or reviewing.

Since my PC when switched on is on full attack more for gaming, this works for me. I shutdown my PC once I am done. I have been doing this since my 6700k and have no issues whatsoever. Remember, that your power plan in windows is also set to performance mode when overclocking too.
