9900k thermal throttle

hi everyone, so i just build a pc with 9900k with corsair h150 aio overclock to 5ghz @ 1.35 v core on aorus master

when i try to stress test it on prime95 v26.6 i realise that my chip kept hitting 105 degree when i start the test with no air conditioning on. i know 9900k is suppose to be hot but is it suppose to be this hot even with a 360 aio?

i tried removing the stock thermal paste and am using kryonaut but i’m still facing the same issue. is there anything else i can do or check?

I don't get thermal throttling using a H100i PRO RGB at 5GHz non-AVX workloads, my 9900K seems to be drawing around 180W while running Prime 95, temp is around 90C.
However the H100i cooler cannot handle AVX 5GHz Prime 95, CPU draws more than 230W power, temp easily exceed 100C.

I never run my 9900K at 5ghz i only running at 4.7ghz. My Kraken X62 cannot handle the heat.

From MSI, board vendor info perspective

Test setup 360 rad + cpu waterblock custom loop (bitspower) at 1.35V with a fairly high load line calibration mode used.
On an AIO you can only stick around the low 1.3V's in high power consumption stress tests if you'd use that as a gauge.


Notice the 3 highlights for stability he emphasizes on, (relative to your personal usage).

I may be wrong, but the H150 is not a very good AIO with stock fan. I've seen some reviews where it runs hotter because Corsair prioritised noise over cooling performance. Also with an all core 5Ghz, you need a very powerful cooler to keep the heat in check. Not all chips are made equal, and despite some running at 5Ghz, it may require less power and thus, less heat.

This is very true. I'm using the H150i and I swapped out all my fans to ML-120 Pro. I can run 5Ghz on my 9700k with no AVX offset @ 1.33V. Gaming temps are under 70 easily and AVX stress testing like Intel Burn Test peaks at 86 degrees. Stock H150i fans really cannot make it especially at our ambient temps. Make sure your LLC Load Calibration is set to Turbo only on Gigabyte boards. Anything higher than Turbo you're going to have massive voltage spikes so check on that setting too.

9900k also runs hotter due to hyperthreading so even a 360 AIO has a hard time cooling it. I would recommend you to swap out the fans to ML-120 Pro and run it at 80% fixed fan speed and try again. Do not run Corsair fan profiles as they are very weak. Just run custom fixed at 80% fan speed as it's not very loud. Make sure you set pump performance setting is set to Extreme. I hope you've setup your link cable to the motherboard and not running the AIO at default. Because running it at default is really going to cook your CPU. It's all defaulting to a very weak profile.

A silent solution for the 9900k while cooling it is like putting lipstick on a pig. So you have to choose either or.

Won't be as bad as your initial results for sure.

Most importantly what casing are you using and where did you locate the AIO? Top or Front? What case fans are you using and how are they configured? I also replaced my thermal paste on the Corsair but that made only a negligible 1-2 degrees difference. Could even be margin of error.

hmmm i should give it a try i’m currently using lian li o11 casing with 9 fans 6 intake 3 side 3 bottom and aio rad on top and fans exhausting out

Hyper-Threading is a waste of power. Disable it in the bios.

so i changed the fan profile to extreme and it seems to work now although still hovering around 96 when running realbench and prime95

Make sure your pump is set to Extreme too.

ya was silly of me i thought u just have to select the profile didn’t know you have to select the profile then set them individually on each fan and the pump

Hahaha yeah Corsair Link is quite clunky with the options but once set, should work great. Try running the fans at 100% for the stock fans and see what your temps are. Cause the ML-120 fans certainly makes a difference.
