Any places outside of taipei that are a must go? I heard Hualien is good?

It really depends on what you’re looking for.
Hualien is nice for scenery (taroko gorge, hehuanshan,qixingtan) and it’s laid-back vibe.

Maybe you can do hualien/yilan, and perhaps taichung/nantou? Taichung is famous for fengchia night market, but there’s also the rainbow village (details here), it’s also near cingjing farm and SML, and lavender farm.

If you have a bit more time you can go further south, e.g. taitung, pingtung etc. you can surf or do seasports, visit Erluanbi Park in kenting (details here). There’s the love river and the temple in kaohsiung that’s quite famous. Most of these attractions I’d only go once though…

also depends on who you're going with? family/friends/gf/wife?

9 days huh. Am assuming u hv been to tpe and not gonna do the usual attractions like 101, chiang Kai shek memorial hall etc. also assuming ur not hiring any taxi driver.

Agree with grunge attitude, taichung is fun. u can consider going cingjing and sun moon lake. Stay one night each. From sml , can easily get to Checheng/jiji (old train station) , xitou (nature stuff). So that's 4 days already. Then one day for rainbow village and taichung city area (yizhong, jingming street, feng jia night mkt which is superb)

If ure looking at closer to taipei, can take day trips to
1. Jiufen and jingguashi and Keelung night mkt
2. Yilan (traditional arts museum And cold spring)
3. Shifen, pingxi, jingtong, houtong.
4. Xindian/wulai for hot spring
That's 3 days already

1 D: Taichung downtown, and Fen Jia Night Market
I leave one day buffer for transportation

Aside from the above i also heard that Taitung is very beautiful...
I have no idea what's there in Tainan though.

how long to spend there? i recall doing a quick look on tripadvisor of the attractions and deciding against going because i was looking for more of nature/nice scenery than temples/museums...

i went to Tainan three years ago, but did the tripadvisor tour sort of thing - confucius temple, koxinga ancestral shrine etc. Wasn't so keen to go back, even if i did like the Anping area, esp the Anping Tree House. then last year went back again as we had friends there, and discovered a whole new side to Tainan - it's not only historical, but has a nice laid back cultural vibe going. many art installations in the old district (near 正興街 ), cafes, indie shops, scattered among the markets and old houses. we stayed in a converted old shophouse (正興咖啡館), next to the famous softserve icecream, and opposite the even more famous cut fruit shop... for nature we went to the Taijiang national park (you can take a boat ride around the mangrove swamps), and ate at hole-in-the-wall tze char places, and a gyudon place that was run by a guy who sold like 25 bowls a day?? had drinks at cafe flaneur (in a quiet alley), and visited Tsaoji Secondhand Bookstore (surely the coolest second hand bookstore there is).
