A confused Singaporean!

Hi everyone,

I've got a few questions/doubts about enrolling for my degree. I'm a middle aged Singaporean and worked for around 12-13 years.

I'm currently looking for a business degree and PSB/Kaplan comes to my mind. However, i'd wanna ask if those 1 yr top-up degree are good enough for me? Most of e 1 yr degree comes with around 6 modules so im kinda worried if im shortchanging myself.

Another thing is, will the reputation/ranking of uni affect my chance if i decide to hop to another job? I understand for young and fresh grads, these are impt but im not sure if it does affect someone like me.

For example, Birmingham city (1 yr deg, kaplan) and Edinburgh Napier (1 yr, PSB) I apologise for the long post but i hope someone here can give me a good advice. Ive got working experience but just lacking paper qualifications. So pls help me out. Thanks all.

Generally, there kind of 1 yr+ 'Top-up' degrees aren't very highly regarded in Singapore.... If u wanna gain entry to Civil Service, it wouldn't even be recognized...

Have u considered taking professional certifications instead?

Thanks for e reply. As for prof certs, im yet to consider as i felt that might as well take a degree since im confident to juggle work, family and studies at e same time. Im mostly in private sector throughout my life and a couple of yrs in semi govt side.

Been yrs since i got my diploma so kinda lost touch with e current tertiary system.

Kinda agree with this. 6 modules may lack the depth but its better than having no degrees

You can check out SUSS programmes as well. I think they have more programmes catered to professionals. (Not super sure about this)

If youre keen on prof cert, check try checking out CIMA ACCA etc. It may take 1-3 years to clear it but i think its more recognised than a 1 yr degree.

I feel like I'm your situation, your decade+ worth of working experience is what counts the most during the hiring process, especially in a field like business. The degree is more of a symbol of you wanting to "upgrade" yourself and show others that you possess dedication as well as a quantifiable measure of your knowledge in your field. It will probably help you in terms of promotions in the future. As such, I don't think the uni in question matters as much as it should to a fresh grad, and the unis from Kaplan or PSB are mostly reputable ones (as in they aren't scams or short change you in terms of education, cannot compare to local though). If you are looking at a part time degree, do give SUSS a look. They're designed for mature students.

I second this. A part time degree from SUSS seems ideal for OP's scenario. Government recognized programme in an environment catered for mature students.

It’s been a year, just curious which one did you enrolled in the end?
