Hi All,

I have a few questions in regards to Tottori.

My wife and I will be from Osaka, would a day trip suffice? I will be going there to see the snow covered sand dunes in January 2018. Thinking of getting the morning train(3hrs30mins) then save some time to go back Osaka.

What's the weather like? I googled and it says the lows will reach 4 degrees. With the added wind, how COLD would it be?

Any recommended shoes to wear at the dunes?

the sea of japan is a bit unpredictable in winter.... the winds could halt ur trip prematurely.
I do not know of anyone who recommends going there to see snow.

Tottori deserves more than the sand dunes, IMHO. In winter, it is very slow in Tottori. It is the least populate prefecture of Japan.

I can handle cold weather but certainly not wind. The difference in temperature can be very substantial. Perhaps a day trip is good enough or side track to Miyazu after that?

I dont know if it seems weird, but nothingness entrances both my wife and me lol. there's something about being the only human life in a usual tourist destination that thrills the both of us. Although the super strong wind would deter us.

What seems appropriate to wear? I have a really THICK and HEAVY wool jacket that I can layer on top of heat techs and what nots. Its just the shoes im worried about. are the dunes steep?

I was there in April this year. There is no standard guideline to recommend the type of shoes. However, there is 'cleaning shoes off the sand' area at entrance/exit at specific spot. I think it is good idea to wear mid high shoes because the sand is very deep as you walk along it towards the sea.
