A website/discussion platform/e-commerce

Hello everybody,

I am looking to build a website where I could post news like a blog, provides a discussion space and also an ecommerce function. I was thinking of using wordpress and vbulletin, could anybody provides some inputs whether if that my idea is feasible? What are the other parts that I would require for this project. I'd welcome other recommendations or suggestions.

Please pardon my IT idiocy and try to explain as lehman as possible.

I believe the intention to start any venture is both exciting and cool.

For a start, I would suggest that we keep things simple by not overly employ too many technology.

Wordpress seems to fit the needs for all the function describe above. Most likely, you have to find the correct plugin and customise to fulfil your needs. Of course, custom programming should be avoided as much as possible to speed up the development process knowing that wordpress has tons of plugin by its disposal.

Once the website is up, you can then source for a web hosting provider, location of the server, uptime of the provider, projected traffic for your website etc. are all the metrics which you need to take into account when choosing a provider.

However more importantly is the business side of the venture, the purpose of the site, the process flow of how the users use your side, the Stickiness of the site. Considering other things first before this is just a cause for a distraction. However once the plan is set and the future looks promising, then implementing it is real and fruitful challenge.
