I'm planning to take acca, icaew, sqp or cpa program after graduation. But i don't know which one should I take. Now, I'm going to study accountancy and financial management offered by Uni of Portsmouth, it's one of the courses provided by Kaplan. However, my brother encouraged me to take sqp, cpa or icaew instead of acca, he said that it was worthless. Can someone advise me on what to do?

Icaew if you can. Otherwise, ACCA. SQP last option.

If u just want to work in Singapore, take the SQP.

SQP and ICAEW

what I need to be able to study for an icaew qualification?

ICAEW and SQP they are of the same structure and level of difficulty. Completing it will be quite tough but if you determine you should be able to complete it. If you have not much confidence in completing it you can consider doing ACCA, which provide good exemption for ICAEW. Please be reminded ACCA is not recognized by ISCA.

If I am not wrong, I heard that in year 2018 the ACCA is like no longer recognised or something like phased out etc.

Who says ACCA is phase out, bull **** with all the misunderstanding or misread under SQP.

I suggest you chiwawa go read up more before anyhow say.

ICAEW is the top tier professional accounting body in the UK, but it's standards are high and you won't get many exemptions. ICAEW also requires you to take it part time basis with a full time job.

ACCA is a 3rd tier accounting body, it offers the most exemptions and can be completed within the shortest time. However the standards are the same as ICAEW. Currently ACCA and ICAEW has a MOU. After 5 years of membership with ACCA, you can be converted to ICAEW member as well.

CPAA is an Australia recognized accounting body just like the GAAP in US. If you are taking CPAA, certain knowledge like law and taxation may not apply but it is still accreditated.

SQP is like the new bird. If your goal is to get CA Singapore, you will need to do SQP. But I feel SQP is weird, their standards for exemption is set higher then ICAEW. I don't think I am planning to go through SQP until the MOU is fully established.

I would say if you want a internationally recognized professional accounting cert, go for ACCA. If you intend to work in UK, Wales or Ireland in future, go for ICAEW. If you just want to stay in Singapore, go through SQP because it's passing rate is the hugest among all.

For those candidate who is on SQP program need to be registered under a ATO. Even though you have pass all SQP papers, you still need to work for audit/ accounting firms or specific commercial company. From what I know, usually candidates will apply to a firm before embark on the SQP. It is not as simply working in any organisation doing accountant work.

However, doing ACCA route in SG has setback which some individual should consider. ACCA allow non-degree holders to have membership. However, SQP only take in degree holder. When both parties sign for MOU, they will need to consider that factor. With introduction of ATO, likely ACCA holder need to work for a ATO before applying for ISCA member.

I heard from friend who was doing ICAEW, he use ACCA to get into ICAEW program.
You may consider doing that or wait for MOU to be sign with ISCA.

Whether you are doing ACCA,ICAEW or SQP in Singapore, there is no difference.
Because all of them are recognized by employer in Singapore even with the SQP.
Take a look at jobstreet and MNC, how many employer hiring ACCA graduate.
Even with SQP, ACCA is still considered prestige in Singapore, Why? simple because internationally it is recognigsed.
If those school reconigsed by SQP, all of them are local school.
Why? Government support government mah. Even ICAEW so prestige internationally not inside.

Just take a look at some key people with ACCA cert in singapore.
KK Hospital CFO, Motorola Finance director.

Join ICAEW as an ACCA member | Members of other professional bodies | Join us | ICAEW

Qualified members of ACCA - living and working outside the UK - with a minimum of five years' full membership and post-qualification experience in an accounting and/or business environment may apply to join the ICAEW through the Pathways to Membership programme.

Eligibility for Pathways to Membership | Members of other bodies | Join us | ICAEW | ICAEW

You need to be a full member for ACCA which takes 3 years to attain and another 5 years as a full member of ACCA. So in all, it takes 8 years to achieve.

However if you want the faster way, you can always apply for exemption:

ACCA students can apply up to 12 exemptions. I believe completing the 3 papers is faster then waiting out the 5 years.

chiwawa, what you saying is actually not applicable already. Currently there is no MOU between ICPAS and ACCA and it is ongoing.

The one you are saying is only for ACCA students who registered and took their 1st paper by 2013.
