I am looking at self study for all the subjects... any particular subjects to avoid? Or best place to gert the study materials?

Hmm. Personally, unless you have really strong background with accounting...
Do go for the lessons, if not you're wasting your money.
But I do agree that F1-F3 is self-study-able. Cant say the same for the rest.

You have to take 12 papers before you can avoid 2 option paper... you can decide what you want by then...

Self study is... hmmm... not easy... but is possible because the study guides and revision kits are quite good...

Just take the papers lor... if you find yourself failing then maybe you really consider going for classes...

f1 (accountant in business) is totally theory-based right? if i have backgrounds in accountings, will the load of taking all f1-f3 be slightly lighter? and if i wanna register i just go to any school to register as acca member + pay for exam fees horh?

registering ACCA and exams i think is at the left corner of CPA house

actually i feel that taking all papers without exemption is better because the later papers build on the first 3 papers. Have a good foundation else later papers harder to grasp

every exam you will get your result slip with the marks for each paper but eventually a pass/fail certificate will be issued i think

thanks for the link... the passing rate is not pleasing to the eye at all. its so low lost of ppl must have re-taken before. given a passing rate of 50%, this means half the candidates are actually failing and need to retake. its also damaging to the pocket! $$

hmm.. hi.. i self studied myself for the previous level 2 and some lvl 3 papers, now just finished my last 2 papers p2 and 3, not self study for this though. basically, some papers can and are highly recommended for self studying if you are, like me have some financial problems.
So which papers to selfstudy?
Here are the paper i did self study myself, however, note, i have to attempt twice for some of these papers before i passed although its still cheaper than going for lessons.
former 2.1 > now no more 2attempts
2.2 > corporate law, this can be self studied, i got the notes from friends but actually i did not read the notes at all, i just went through all the past year papers and found out that section A, all the questions have been recycled before. 2 attempts
2.3 > ptax , this one quite easy to self study, just memorize all the tax statement and formulaes, there aren't much, so easily can be self studied. 1 attempt
2.4 > HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO GO FOR CLASS, i registered for class but work commitment forced me to go for only 50% of the classes. 52%..Zzzz..lucky pass 1 attempt
2.5 > don't need to go for regular class, if u can go for revision class, they can teach u in 4dayz what u need to learn in 20lessons =] 1 attempt
2.6 > go for class, 2nd highest failure rate other than 2.4 3 attempts!!!
3.1 > highest failure rate in level 3! i took 2 attempts , self studied for 1st time.failed. << 2 attempts
3.3 > self studyable, but not recommended, i went into exam hall without any idea what is balance scorecard, and it came out.25marks, though i passed, but more of luck matter, think they moderated the marks =\ <<1 attempt

oh ya.. forgot to list, i'm exempted from level 1 so i have some background knowledge in accountancy. however, i gave it back to my poly -_-aa, regarding purchasing of textbooks and study guides from saa or ftc, my current p3 lecturer says, don't waste money, study text and guides are for lecturers, not student, if u can understand from the textbooks, then u are good enough to be a lecturer =D 50-70bucks per book.... i rather photocopy from friends

Hi guys, i chance upon this. Would like to find out more about self studying. Say i got my own materials and i had studied for the exam. Is there any webbie that i can register the exam and choose the institution/centre to take the exam then?

It would be great if you guys have something about self study in Singapore to share as well.

Hi not meant to discourage you from self-studying but just offering my honest opinion...

i feel that some papers in ACCA you cant really go for self-studying... like F5,F6, F7, F9 in level 2... you need to know the techniques to tackle some long and complicated questions which are not taught in the textbook. techiques are very important as applying the correct techniques enable u to work faster towards the answer and these papers are all about speed and accuracy. following the textbook may not be enough to understand the concepts or probably u may understand in the end but you may realise you have already took up a huge amount of your time trying to grasp the understanding... lecturers also share with us the likely type of question constructed by the examiners which i feel are very useful in tackling the question during examination time. the words in the question are always twisted intentionally by the examiners to confuse the students... when you are in level 3, the lecturers will also offers you advice on the approach to answer the question. example, the examiners may asked you to construct, assess or explain the answers... you not only need to have the knowledge of the subject but also the know-how to answer these type of questions... in simple words write what the examiners want.

if you are still very keen on self-studying, i would suggest you to get the exam kit + textbook + lecturers notes from either ftc or saa. i read through kaplan acca textbook, i can assure you the content inside is definitely not enough or not up to par to solve acca exam question. in fact i passed all my exam (now level 3) without even flipping through the textbook once.

you need to register with ACCA UK to be a student first before they will issue a username + password for you to login inside myacca to register for your exam. u can choose the centre to take your exam in myacca.

Yup, self studied F7 and i think i'm gonna fail terribly. But if you start early, it's still doable. If you have no time, better go for lessons. Audit can be self studied though. I didn't know lecturer notes can be purchased? Is it true bio?

lecturer notes cannot be bought from the school but can be purchased online as in those past semester lecturer notes. in f7, with feedback from both roy and sammi students, they will taught some good techniques to answer consolidated or published financial statements... would probably save you a good 10mins than going through the conventional method.

is ACCA the course i should take up if i just want to learn more about accounting for self improvement?(bcos i have 1 whole year free waiting to reapply to uni,so just want to find something to learn)

so far, i dont have any future plans to be an accountant though...and i know nothing about how this accounting thing works..
