Accessing my internal hard disk has slowed.

Recently accessing my pictures on my internal 1TB western digital HD seems to have slowed down quite a bit. I am able to access my pictures on my external HD much faster than on my internal drive.

I have defrag the HD (took 13 hrs), did a disk check and repair but have not seem any significant improvement. Hope my hard disk is not dying. Any suggestions?

I would suggest you replace the HDD.

check the "reallocated sectors" count using a software called GsmartControl

if there are numerous bad sectors , don't diskcheck or defrag anymore ... backup important files first , then backup junk files

it does seem that your hdd might be dying.. best to backup now while you still can and get a replacement drive..

A faster way to discover the bad sector count is to grab a copy of crystaldiskinfo.

Now transfering files to my external Hd also very slow and even stuck at a certain point. Could it other problems?

I think I probably need recommendations on what type of hard disk and where to get it from Qoo, lazada, sim lim etc. Long time since i bought any hard ware. I have my OS and main programs on a SSD.

The most common problem with folder storing massive amount of picture files. Whenever you click the folder, Windows need to create the thumbview and associated the files with the default software thus system resources and time are needed for these operation.

Right click on the folder>properties>customize(tab) then change the default setting from Pictures to General items, you can then access the folder as fast as any other folders.

It might be a security permission setting. I have encountered once when loaded the PC with WinPE and access the HDD, i had to grant permission settings to it and it took a while.. might be worth to look into it..

Right click on the drive->Security tab->Advanced. top part where it says owner, change it to your username and click apply.

it might cause the whole disk to stall. better not.
have you disabled thumbnail previews in windows explorer?

Symptoms of dying hdd. Mine literally hanged when I tried to access them. In the end, bought a new hdd to replace it. It was close to 7 years before showing such signs.

I have about 240GB free disk space for my 1TB hard disk.

I have a feeling I have to get a new hard disk soon. Just did a bit of googling an d it appears that a 2TB Seagate Barracuda drive seems to have quite good review. SLS price list about $85. Any comments about this drive?

Worth getting from SLS or lazada etc?

Get a 2TB Toshiba HDD from Tradepac at $75 instead.

Thanks for the recommendation. Was thinking about getting a Toshiba as well as my external hard disk is a Toshiba and it continues to serve me well .

I suppose the Toshiba should be a 7200 rpm? Whats the warranty like?

Yes, 7200rpm. 2 years.

Use CrystalDiskInfo, is a better program.
