People,

I am looking for Hotel recommendations for 7 nights in Hokkaido during July.

Will be driving. I have not exactly fixed my itenary but we definately want to try the following

1) Lavendar at Furano
2) Hokuryu for sunflowers
3) Yuburi melon picking?

I am not really interested in Otaru, noboribetsu, lake toya area as this is our third hokkaido trip, but first time in Summer. So interested in seasonal stuff.

Is there any accommodations strongly recommended? We don't like onsen so that is optional.

Price is an important consideration. Budget is around 15000 yen per room (twin). Can go up to 25000 yen per room for 1-2 nights.

thanks

Below is the suggested hotels my wife did...

Tokachigawa Tokachigawa Daiichi
Akan Kushiro Royal Inn (1 hr drive to Lake Akan but cheap)
Shiretoko Shiretoko Grand Hotel - JapanICAN
Abashiri Toyoko-Inn Okhotsk Abashiri
Asahikawa Dormy Inn Asahikawa
Furano Furano Natalux official site
Sapporo Richmond Hotel Sapporo Ekimae

I am thinking of driving up to wakkanai for the reshi/rebun island but not sure if it is worth it. It is either wakkanai north or shiretoko east..

Bro, do let us know your exact iternary 1st before I can offer you better recommendations and budget ya. :)

Anyway, are u sure you want to drive all the way from central Hokkaido (Asahikawa/Furano) to Wakkanai or Shiretoko national park? The journey will be very long for either leg ya. Are u sure? Eg, the drive from Wakkanai to Asahikawa is almost 5 hrs. :s13:

FYI, car rental tends to be some 20-30% higher in July to Sep as it is considered a high season at that time. Hotels rates can be even higher at that time too, esp in places where there's alot of tourists eg Furano, Sapporo, Hakodate etc.

May I recommend Sapporo Tokyu Excel hotel for your stay in Sapporo? :) Its one of the best hotel I've stayed in Japan. Its a western hotel so no onsen, Go to hotel.com and see my latest review there :)

If you're already at Abashiri, why don't you you proceed to Mombetsu as well? The seafood is excellent there and you can visit Kamiyubetsu Tulip park and Pink Moss park if you do an overnight over there.

the plan is not yet fixed so can still change. no hotels booked yet.

dates are fixed though.

I think for 7 nights, I can probably hit either Shiretoko or wakkanai since I am not going to Toya, Otaru, etc.

Five hours drive is not too bad. We have driven 5+ hours in Australia, NZ and Lofoten Island in Norway.

I think the distance looks shorter than Australia... are the main roads very hard to drive? I would assume the main cities have pretty good road connections...

Hokkaido roads are well layout and they're easy to drive on. Their road surface, however are quite well worn. No thanks to the harsh winter conditions and salt spray on the road. In addition many roads have faint markings no thanks to the heavy snow so do drive with care.

And don't speed over there. Their police are very efficent. Their speed limit is low and I can relate the frustration of driving at 50km/h on a long and I mean long stretch of empty straight roads

I thought Tulip and pink moss season is June? In late July, I think the only flowers in Season is mainly Lavendar and Sunflower.

Also Yuburi Melon. yummy

As you can see, winter season was unsually long this year. As I've mentioned in my own trip report, temp remained abnormally low for late mid spring this year.

I failed to see any tulips nor pink moss for this trip, even though I made lots of past yr references which specifically stated that mid May was a great time to enjoy all the said flora with pleasant temp

And temp fell back to high single digit for the past few evenings for many parts of Hokkaido this week. Although the flora are fully bloomed tks to higher day time temp, temp is still cold in eastern and central Hokkaido esp.

So with any luck you may just be able to see some leftover tulips n pink moss in July. And u dont need to pay for any entrance fee at that time lor:s13:
