May I know what accountancy in university is like? Does it involve very complex math or simple math like addition and subtraction? Should I go for it even if I am weak in math?

There is no complex math in accounting modules, but you may need to take calculus and statistics module if you do not have exemptions.

Debit and credit itself is just low level accounting. In another words, its called book-keeping only. High level acctg is more than punching calculator. In Uni n above, you will eventually work towards more complex acctg related modules and subjects like group consol, taxation, coy law, audit and assurance etc.

Debit and credit were covered within the first 15 minutes of my Accounting 1 module LOL I guess I've mastered the art of accounting.

Sure you have. Thanks for your insightful input even after completing your accounting 1 2 3 4 5..n modules

I will elaborate on some of the learning outcomes of accountancy (what you would do at work)

1. Corporate Reporting
- Record and process transactions and events
- Prepare external financial reports (Statement of Financial Statements, Profit and Loss, Cash Statement, Consolidated Group Statements)
- analsye and interpret financial statements

2. Taxation
- Tax computation and assessments for both corporate and individual entity in Singapore context
- Tax compliance and verification
- Tax planning and advice

3. Audit and Assurance
- Prepare for and plan for the audit process
- Collect and evaluate evidence for audit
- Review and Report on the findings of audit

Most of the calculations are simple arithmatic (plus minus multiply and divide) but the concepts can be rather complex.

The very basics of accountancy is recording transactions (credit and debit) which can be very confusing for new students.

You can easily find the financial statements of any public listed company using google. Take a read (some can go to hundres of pages). Basically that is what you will be dealing with. Need to know how to understand all the mechanics and technicalities.

If you want a taste of accountancy, go find a Financial Accounting (Basic) book from the library hehe :)

Happy to help! I'm glad you managed to find many useful resources on Google:) Hope you also found out that accountancy is more than mere journal entries; it is interpreting financial statements, applying the FRS, costing, audit and so much more. It is in an entire field of its own. It would be good to start reading up before school starts if you have the time because some people take a longer time to grasp the basic concepts like debits and credits. Like why can't they just use plus and minus right, so confusing tsk :p

I hope work in the big 4 has been fun!! I've always thought that working in the big 4 was immensely tiring, but it's good to know that there's time to study part-time and give advice on forums :) I wish my time management skills were just as good >< I also want to learn to make coffee everyday
