Adding SSD or Fusion Drive upgrade is so ex and I intend to buy a new Imac for home use.

I would like to ask for some recommandations. As a computer noob, I see the youtube that adding my own SSD is too difficult for me plus I do not have the necessary tools.

As such, I would ask, would it be better to

1. Spend $350 for Apple to upgrade to fusion drive?

2. Go Sim Lim and ask someone to help add in a 256GB SSD

If for 2nd option anyone can recommend me any shop who does add ssd? And the cost to add the SSD?

it is difficult to upgrade hard disk in 2012 27" imac. It might not be covered with ur warranty if u open and dmg the parts while upgrading.

I suggest u take the Apple's offering.

Hook up to USB 3.0 and use the SSD.
if you're very concerned about speeds use the thunderbolt bolt

I would avoid option 2, at all cost.

If you need to ask the question in the forum, then my recommendation to you is go for Option 1. Spend the money and enjoy your system. If you have little knowledge of such and not willing to risk it, then don't save the money and end up more future hassle. Somethings are better to be prudent.

Adding in an external SSD is out of the Qn because I want a complete system. That's one of the reason why I bought an Imac.

But is it possible to add an extra SSD to the new Imac system? Coz I can't seem to find the tutorial on how to do it online for the new Imac 2012.

I would prefer an extra SSD compare to a fusion drive

You needs adhesive for proper glass and display resealing. guess they not using magnet anymore like the old model.

seriously...pay Apple to get it done and no warranty void. I went mac mini as its much easier to DIY. did a ssd upgrade, fusion it with the 1tb hdd that comes with it + upgrade to 16GB ram.

u can read thru this thread Rip Those Macs Open - MacRumors Forums . someone open up the imac and changes the hdd + cpu!!!!

here's a video on how to change the hdd.

Sim lim likely wont be any cheaper. Also note that the fusion drive is not just an extra ssd, it also has special programming to move around commonly used programs.

Considering that it is a one-off investment for a long term benefit, I would personally just pay upfront for apple to include the fusion drive and save myself any further headaches or inconvenience.
