Hi everyone.

Since the new rMBP have been released, I noticed that the 15 inch now uses AMD GPU. I did know a few gens back they have switched to AMD instead of using the NVIDIA GPU.

I am studying where my course requires me to use Adobe Premiere Pro, AE, PS and more Adobe Softwares. I also heard from some the Adobe softwares are GPU accelerated.

I also heard that AMD performs badly on the task and that NVIDIA did better. Some even say that the IRIS Graphics are way better than AMD.

In general computer view, there are thousands of choices that can suit my need. What IF I chose the new rMBP 15 inch for my school use?

I have shortlisted some laptops(no arrangements):

1. HP Pavilion 14 2016
2. MSI GS32 (yet to release, i think)
3. ThinkPad T450S
4. IdeaPad 710S Plus
5. Asus UX303LB
6. 2016 13" MacBook Pro with TouchBar
7. 2016 15" MacBook Pro with TouchBar

I am half-hearted to choose my machine as I need to leave with it for the next 2.5 yrs. And it will be my only editing and everything system so it needs to be reliable and long lasting.

All Windows devices above uses NVIDIA GPU and only the 15" uses AMD while the 13" uses Iris 550.
The reason I include MBP is bcz occasionally I use FCPX which is only avail for it.

If price is not an issue, which I should pick?
Which GPU is better? AMD, NVIDIA or Iris?

Not much difference as far as I know, if the GPUs are on par in terms of performance. Just make sure Premiere and After Effects are set to use GPU acceleration. (OpenCL for AMD, CUDA for Nvidia)

If you're getting the MBP, get one with the AMD GPU. Any one will do.

EDIT: forgot to mention: I wouldn't recommend intel iris (the integrated GPU in the CPU) for GPU work. So yeah, don't get the 2016 13" MBP

Gosh, do not know why some are against AMD whether in CPU
and GPU?
Only currently AMD GPU are quite decent in performance.
CPU wise is still lacking behind, ZEN is still months away before
launching.

What you are mentioning are figures that is true only few years backs
and that only applies on Windows only.
Yes AMD GPU once fall behind Nvidia but that is on Windows.

Now on Macbook, it doesn't mean it is slow. :s22:
Probably due to the fact that AMD OpenCL is open source
platform language while Nvidia CUDA is Nvidia propertiary platform.

They used AMD probably due to OpenCL since it is open source more developer could write apps on it easily and of cuz cheaper to develop.
However this is just my opinion, exact reasons remain unknown.

Probably also to due to Apple is working with AMD on a SOC single chip for macbook.
Anyway no harm getting either a Macbook/Notebook with AMD graphics.

Most HP notebook are also using AMD graphics.
My notebook is using AMD graphics so far no issue, gaming is alright.
I also used Adobe suite, no issue either.

Unless you really have deep pocket and want best GPU accelerated performance for Adobe software.
Consider a mobile workstation but that will cost around $3k and it's very heavy.

3k for workstation is already equivalent to the new MBP or even more expensive. Hahahah.

Anyway, thanks. Didnt know of that fact tho...
