Hi Guys,

Going to build a new system with my son to replace the current one. Last time, I spent around S$10k on the current system. It was about 5 years ago.

Now, when playing Fallout 4, the loading time as well as the in-game loading time were quite long, so I think it is time for a new system.

I want to take advantage of the new Skylake CPU, Mobo, and higher RAM speed support. I think it is also time for me to go 4k.

Basically, I want to invest and buy all the best components that I can get now, so as not to have to change and upgrade any components for the next 5 years (hopefully), except maybe the graphic card. This is exactly what I did the last time round.

So, here are the components I think I should be getting. Please feel free to share your thoughts and advises, especially if you know there are better components / parts that I missed.

CPU: i7-6700K
Cooler: One of those Cooler Master water cool product? Not sure which one to get.
Mobo: Asus Maximus 8 Extreme
RAM: G Skill Trident Z 3200 16GB x 2 (or should I go higher? to 64GB?)
GPU: Asus GTX 980 Ti (will do SLI later if need be, and/or add a PhysX card using my old MSI GTX 980).
Sound: I think don't need sound card as the Mobo already supports 7.1 sound (I am only going to use 5.1)
PSU: CM V1200 Platinum should be more than enough.
HDD: Samsung 950 Pro M.2 512G x 2 (1 for OS, 1 for Gaming), plus WD Red Pro 1TB for general storage.
Monitor: not sure which is the best, largest 4k monitor these days. Acer 34"? Samsung curve?
Speakers: still very happy with my current Z505, but perhaps I should get the Z906 this time?
OS: Windows 10 Pro 64 bit (or should I stick to Windows 7?)
Casing: this one quite headache. Can't find a cool one that I like. Closest one that I like a bit is In Win Chopin (silver). I don't mind spending a bit more to get a cool looking case that has got good airflow. Don't mind a mod case as well, but don't know where to get them.
Keyboard and Mouse: one of those from Logitech I guess.

So that's it. Your comments, advises, and help are much appreciated.

Cheers
:)

Random noob passing through ~
Need up to 10k for a machine last time? Holy moly.....

Anyway I don't think it is possible to truly build a future proof 4k gaming machine yet leh especially with some games having such high demands (witcher3 or shadow of mordor)

Maybe try 1440p 144Hz monitor
I5 6500k (do ur son really need a i7?)
Gtx980ti
Etc. :p

Let me rephrase this. If you have a budget of S$10k, how would you build a system for gaming?

- not looking to future proof things, just good enough to last for 5 years.
- not for my son, it is for me. Son just want to build it with me.
- mainly for gaming, hate to have to tune down settings to run a game.
- I posted similar question here 5 years ago when I was about to build it. Got loads of good advice. Sadly, old posts, with pictures of the built system, were deleted.
- no need to guess if this is real or not. Will gather advice here, and build it over the weekend. Real or not real, you will find out soon. Nothing to proof.
- some people spend money on cars, some on watches, some on home theater, etc. I like my gaming rig! Hahaha... much cheaper in comparison to the above!

X99 - not sure about this, but read a lot about Z170. Will research more on X99.
SLI - not for now, but maybe later.
Jover Chew? Old joke already leh...
4k - I think I will stick to this. If don't like, can go down. But if I start low, hard to go up to 4k later.

To show how the costs add up quickly:

CPU + Mobo: 1030
Ram: 559
GPU: 1329
PSU: 359
SSD x 2: 1198
HDD: 449
CM Cooler: 178
Sound: 429 (optional)
Case: 300 (budget)
4k monitor: 1700 (budget)
speakers: 500
others: 500
Total: 8,531 (more if I go with X99)

On X99 you can actually run 2 graphic cards with PCIe x16 mode on both where Z170 can only do 2x PCIe x8 mode.
so for me X99 is much better
X99 is for 6 core cpu
z170 is for 4 core cpu

8x and 16x no diff anyways, so really depend on if you wanna go more then 2-way or not

Technically no diff but more lanes for other stuff like your pcie based storage.

Do custom water cooling if interested.
Ditch the new speakers bah, don't think the old one is overly inferior. Case can go caselabs liao or Parvum if you want something novel

since money is of no issue, it's best to squeeze out the best your money can bring. forget local.

Try Singularity Computer to custom build one for you with custom water cooling. But the only agony you'll face is the wait. Worth it imo
