not that easy to fry as long stay within safe voltage and temperature with capable cooler
1.4v is the recommended safe vcore limit for skylake ... 1.45v for custom watercooling

most ppl's 6600k and 6700k reach 4.7ghz cannot push higher without going into unsafe voltage although temperature still got headroom to 100celcius

prolonged high temperature high voltage will degrade the chip .... means bluescreen more often need to reduce the speed or up the voltage
it is gradual death , not suddenly fry

yes its looks fine, but still depends on how many features u need from the mobo, if not many can get b150.

if u want to overclock get a i5 6600k+z170 board, as the boards have lots of headroom for OC. still there is a possible fry if not doing it correctly.
I have no guides, but u can google for it. Yes u will need it as they dun come with it. As for pushing it how much are u going for the boost? 5.0GHz? or lesser?

im gonna try 4.4 or 4.6Ghz to be safe.

However, i have to source for another mobo liao. any suggestions for budget z170 mobo?

well u can consider these:

Asus Z170M-PLUS @557
Asus Z170-K @570
MSI Z170A PC Mate @555
Gigabyte GA-Z170M HD3 @554
Gigabyte GA-Z170 HD3 @571

All prices are bundle with CPU and quote from Tradepac.

need very capable cooler

the budget cooler with single 120mm fan , 212evo , cannot make it ....
make the temperature too high especially here in singapore hot to start with ...
too easily reach 80celcius and the cpu become unstable at high overclock .....
by then , regrets surface ... to spend more money change fans or change the whole cooler

alternative is don't overclock
get the non-oc i7 6700 and pair with cheaper motherboard
same multithreaded performance as highly overclocked i5 .... but if the game is only 4 threads then the i5 overclocked still better

my i5 6600k @ 4.6ghz is 3% slower than i7 6700 in cinebench R15 , overall they cost about the same if count the cost of Z170 motherboard and big air cooler

you will also need to add in a AIO or Air Cooler, cause OC chips does not comes with any CPU cooler

Boss - where do you compare the OC-ed 6600k to stock 6700? i tried looking, doesn't seem to have a benchmark for OC-ed CPUs?

OCed CPU need to browse those OC forum , overclock.net forum intel cpu subforum , it's usually just a single screenshot people post after they accomplish some target

in the past , users overclock for a free 10+% boost in performance
but now there are too many prerequisites , more expensive Z series motherboard and expensive cooler , capable power supply
no more savings .... might as well get non-overclock i7 and pair with cheap motherboard at least you are guaranteed a certain level of multi-threaded performance

no overclock
-use bundled stock cooler

no overclock but want to spend a bit more to lower temperature and noise
- coolermaster t4 from amazon
-coolermaster 212evo from amazon

overclock
-noctua d14 d15 from amazon
-phanteks tc14pe from amazon

can buy ddr4 ram together at amazon to accumulate the minimum 125 for free shipping

well i believe it can fit.

frostflow 240L is around this dimension (not including fans, 274×120×27mm)

but not sure how much space for the top mounting. as u might need to remove back fans.

Not sure if there can be more savings if you go for Z97 + 4xxxk. Still can overclock.
