Hi guys, thinking of upgrading my pc over the next few weeks/months.

Current specs:
i7-920 with stock Dell mobo, CM V4 GTS cooler
MSI r7850
8gb DDR3 RAM 1066-1333
250gb Samsung Evo 850
1TB and 320gb HDD

Looking at the following upgrades:

Mobo + CPU: i5-6500 combo around 450? (with DDR3 RAM support?)
GPU: Evga GTX 960 4GB from Amazon (bought)
PSU: FSP Aurum S 500w gold $90 from Lazada
Case: Fractal Design R5 or S around $135 from Lazada
RAM: Maybe change to 8gb 1600-1866 or 16gb if got good deal

SSD: reuse Samsung 850 Evo, with Windows 10 retail key from reddit for around $40
HDD: reuse
ODD: reuse from current, not needed much, if at all (got external ODD also)
Monitors: 2x Dell U2414H

Usage mainly for gaming (currently Cities Skylines; lined up the Batman series, AC, FO4 maybe, MMOs like GW2), some processing work (Lightroom/Photoshop), multitasking for schoolwork (1 sem left so not that big a priority)

Any thoughts on the proposed upgrades, or can I do better for some components? Budget around 1k total for the change (slightly flexible), best if can last the next 3-4 years or so (maybe not the GPU)

correct me if i am wrong.
i7 920 is a 8core cpu.
working better at ps and light room.

your psu is a stock or a upgraded psu?
if so i think just upgrading the gfx will do.
till u decide to up to ddr4.
ddr3 ram not that worth to swap out.. for that inc.

Yeah, i7 would be better at processing-heavy tasks, but lightroom and ps not my main usage anw

PSU is stock, so better to upgrade ba since it's aging alr. System was bought in 2009

Can consider swapping up to a DDR4 mobo as well, since the difference is not that big unless considering the RAM prices. In that case I'll just look out for DDR4 RAM deals on Amazon, not much issue. What would you recommend for i5-6500 + DDR4 mobo?

Read that skylake officially doesn't support ddr3 ram due to the higher ram voltage. Any experts care to weigh in on whether it would still be safe to use ddr3 ram on a skylake ddr3 board, or is it better to just go ddr4?

It only officially supports 1.35V DDR3. Your DDR3 will work but will harm Skylake's DDR3 IMC on the long run. So not advisable.

Just go with DDR4 then.

Or you can choose to go with Haswell, final platform for DDR3, since it isn't performing any poorer than Skylake.

Good point, since as a casual user skylake is unlikely to offer that much more over haswell for me also.

Is i5-4590 more recommended?

CPU+Mobo: Intel Core i5-4460 + ASRock H97M Pro4 ($370 Tradepac)
GPU: EVGA GTX 960 SSC 4GB
Casing: Fractal Design Define R5/S ($140 Lazada)
PSU: FSP Aurum S 500W 80+ Gold ($90 Lazada)
RAM: Re-use value ram or G.Skill Ripjaws X 2x4GB 1600MHz (USD30 Newegg)
SSD: Re-use Samsung Evo 850 250GB + 1TB Internal HDD (SATA2 - maybe buy SATA3)

Like this can?
